The latest example of why us Arabs and Muslims will always remain in the dark ages -

UK teacher goes to court in Sudan

A student in her class called Mohammed names a teddy bear after himself …. and now they want to give her 40 lashes and a jail sentence for blasphemy and insulting Islam!!

As usual, I expect riots and flag burning, since thats the limit of our communication methods with the world these days …

P.S. - Fact - The most common name in the world is ……………………….. Mohammad!

Gonu seems to have left Oman finally and is heading towards Iran now. The aftermath is serious, with 53 people reported  dead (49 in Oman and 4 in Iran) and 27 missing till now!

More details are found here at Sleepless In Muscat’s blog.  PLEASE read the blog!!

Everyone has heard about the cyclone by now that is just reaching Oman and is expected to move north towards the Eastern provinces of Saudi and then maybe Kuwait (AlJazeera says its heading north towards Iran avoiding the gulf, but nowhere else does it say that yet). Gonu is now a category 5 hurricane, which the strongest kind of storm.

I tried finding some coverage on tv but there isn’t that much. Even Oman tv has some shows on.

I decided to check out Omani blogs, and fortunately I found two with some info, one with more updates -

Latest from Reuters

The Pakistani minister of tourism resigned yesterday.

She was in France and took a parachute jump to raise money for child victims of the earthquake that struck Pakistan in October 2005. After the jump, she was congratulated by her instructor and that included a hug.

What happened after those pictures??

  • Clerics at a mosque in Islamabad issued a fatwa against her demanding she gets dismissed from the cabinet.
  • She was sacked as head of the women’s wing of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League.
  • Government and Prime Minister don’t stand up for her against the Islamists.
  • She resigns.

I have a question, while she was on a charity jump for Pakistani victims, how many of those people making a big deal of the picture have done anything to help in charities to needy people?

Pakistan is going down a very dangerous path slowly. The Islamists are forcing themselves while the government is not dealing with the situation well at all! They are losing their hold on the system all together.

Other examples of stuff that has happened there include -

  • A Punjab provincial minister was shot dead in the eastern city of Gujranwala because she was not wearing a veil.
  • Self appointed Mullas sending their own troops to patrol the streets to check that everything is Islamic enough to their liking!
  • Students at the ‘Red Mosque’ have been raiding homes they claim to be brothels.
  • Students frm the same mosque have been kidnapping policemen.

Unfortunately, it seems like things are heading to one direction, where Taliban went and destroyed Afghanistan.

In a way, this whole minister incident reminded me of the Nouria Al-Sabeeh swearing in a few weeks ago, when Islamist members of parliament tried to disrupt her by interrupting and threatening before the session.

One guy uses his position to fire 8 people in his department recently in order to replace them with another 8 people that are min “jamaa3ta” (his own kind).

Another guy uses his position to benefit someone very close to him who works in the same company.

My question is, why are they making a big deal out of these things?? I think Gonzalez and Wolfowitz would fit perfectly in almost any company here in Kuwait!!

I’ve talked recently about global warming and environmental issues, and I totally support initiatives that helps reduce CO2 emissions such as the carbon offset (or carbon trading) programs which Cathay Pacific, Tesco, Expedia, Virgin and many more companies are adopting, but this article from the Russian news agency takes the global warming issue to a whole new level!

Belgium to impose tax on barbequing to fight global warming

12:27 | 03/ 04/ 2007

BRUSSELS, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - The government of Belgium’s French-speaking region of Wallonia, which has a population of about 4 million, has approved a tax on barbequing, local media reported.

Experts said that between 50 and 100 grams of CO2, a so-called greenhouse gas, is emitted during barbequing. Beginning June 2007, residents of Wallonia will have to pay 20 euros for a grilling session.

The local authorities plan to monitor compliance with the new tax legislation from helicopters, whose thermal sensors will detect burning grills.

Scientists believe CO2 emissions are a major cause of global warming.

—————————————————–

First of all, taxes on barbequing??? The Belgians need to recheck their priorities! I am 100% sure there are at least a million other more harmful causes of CO2 all around them that should be looked at before barbequing!!

Second, and more important …. they will be using helicopters to monitor barbequing to prevent CO2 emission …. hmmmm, lets go over that again, HELICOPTERS will be flying around all day trying to find if anyone has his grill on!! Are they magical helicopters that move around with the help of the chopper fairy?? Here’s an idea to cut emissions, how about we ban helicopters from circling over the city all day long??

So today we all awoke on confirmation on the deal of the year, where Qtel bought 51% of Wataniya Telecom! They bought out KIPCO’s share in the company in a deal worth 1.1 billion KD.

Qtel is Qatar’s only telecom company. It was listed in 1998, and it provides local and international fixed telephone, mobile, Internet, data and cable television services….with no competition in Qatar! They also started a new telecom company in Oman called Nawras 2 years go, and have been growing since by acquiring companies in places like Singapore and Indonesia (and Kuwait now!)

Wataniya, on the other hand, has been in the market since 1999, and has been associated with the KIPCO group since they started it. Wataniya has a network in Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, the Maldives, and recently bought into a company that works in Saudi Arabia.

The deal is one of the biggest in the region’s history and could be the beginning of many more mergers and acquisitions n the all different sectors in the region.

I have criticized Wataniya more than once, mostly for their branding and marketing efforts. Their products seem to be excellent (I use W-net and it really is excellent!), but they definitely need to work on everything around the product! I had two surveys on the blog a year apart, the first was on August 2005 where I asked what you think “the best corporate brand in Kuwait” is, and Wataniya came in 5th place with 3%. The second was in October 2006 where the question was “Which company do you feel most proud of as a Kuwaiti?” , and Wataniya came in last place with 2 votes out of 129!!

This takeover, even thought done by a Qatari company, could help Wataniya’s branding if the new management actually cared about creating a true strong brand! I actually have high hopes!

Oh….and another example of Wataniya’s really bad marketing and PR is found on their website. The takeover happened at least 2 days ago, and the preparations must have been done months or at least weeks ago, yet they do not mention anything about being bought out! Qtel’s website on the other hand has it on the main page.

We’ll probably hear about the new management soon, and maybe some new plans?? We can hope!
