Sorry the quality isnt great, did it using paint.

There have been several new newspapers in the market. A friend was commenting a couple of days ago about the lack of creativity in their production, basically they all followed each other, take a look -

Notice the smiliraties? The main thing I would guess is trying to go away from the old newspaper styles, and using color for their branding. The fonts are also very different to what was previously used, although a few newspapers have already changed their font, AlSeyassah and AlRai come to mind, and I think AlAnba also did.

A quick look at international newspapers, you will notice that the logos above are similar to newer newspapers and closer to tabloid newspaper logos. You have all these newspapers which are older than 100 years old -

And then you have the newer ones and the tabloids -

Notice the similarities?

The other day I had a discussion with a friend following the Logo R.I.P post on logos in Kuwait in general. We were discussing which logos we liked and which we didn’t like. We agreed on most but had some disagreements on a few. So I decided to have a Rate the Logo post, where I post the logo and the readers give it a rating from 0-10, in a couple of months we will have some idea as to which logos are most hated and loved!

There is no criterea, it is just a matter of taste, whether you like it or not.

I’ll start today with the telecoms, Zain and Wataniya logos -

I hope this leads to some interesting discussions! I would appreciate if you would say why you voted to what.

Let the voting begin!

On this blessed occasion of Champions League football, I have to share this excellent ad shown on ART for this year’s Champions League promotion -

I got this ad from kooora.com forum.

I would love to know which agency came up with it if anyone knows! Very cool ad! I love the taxi driver the most! lol!

I read earlier that MTC’s new logo, Zain, will be launched on Sept 1st, so yesterday I checked the website, zain.com and found that the website is working, but only as a flash intro that keeps repeating. On my way to work today, I also saw their teaser ad with half of the name zain showing.

Their colors seem to be black, purple, and green, which isn’t that different from the logo that was shown here on Kuwaitism earlier 4 months ago!

It was a Kuwaitism exclusive (7arakaat!) back then, and since then I haven’t seen anything about the logo or branding on the net, except a couple of blogs that linked to this blog anyway.

Today, K posted about it, and I will steal his version of the logo which he photoshopped.

When I posted this picture earlier I wasnt sure about the quality of the colors and if the problem was with the picture, but apparently the colors are as they are, and to be honest I dont like th black purple green color scheme, but like I said in my older post, I do like the name quite a bit!

P.S. - Broke the half million visitors mark yesterday….thanks everyone :)

*UPDATE at the bottom*

So Im back!

I’ve been back for a while but for one reason or another I didn’t start writing on the blog. Unfortunately, the first thing I did write was a result of the sad events that occurred last week, totally not as planned!

Anyway, now that I’m back lets get back to business -

I found this interesting (at least for me and others working in marketing in Kuwait) chart today in AlQabas, which shows the top 10 advertisers in Kuwait so far in 2007 -

I dont understand why they have “tourism & travel” as number 5 when its an industry and not a company, but Im also surprised about MTC being below the three banks, that Mitsubishi is there, and that KFC or Americana in general is not included!

Forza’s question in the comments section about McDonalds spending more than banks led me to some research and I found this, from Advertising Age -

(click on the chart for better viewing)

You will find the rest of the 100 in the the original pdf file of top 100 spenders on ads globally from the website.

Whats interesting is that globally, Citigroup are the largest financial institutions in spending for ads, and they come in 46th place globally, while our banks here take 3 of the top 4!

Another interesting thing in the report is the country breakdown of spending, this is how they have Kuwait -

This obviously cannot be correct! There is no way in hell that Little Caesar spent more than Gulf Bank or KFH in Kuwait!! Yum foods is basically KFC & Pizza Hut, not sure if they added them together or what.

To be honest Im not a big fan of the research company that did that PARC (their website doesnt seem to work), so Im not so sure how accurate that is, I would believe the newspaper one more, although neither chart goes into detail on whether its just newspaper spending on spending in general!

I got this ad on my email earlier today from my cousin, I thought it was very smart!

Saw this last week in the newspaper …

So you have a summer program, you have the Crown Prince and his sister as sponsors for the program, and your spending on newspaper advertising, you cant check the name of the program??
