Back to the topic of coffee.
First of all, I have to say that I was contacted by someone at AlShaya who’s opinion really does matter to me. That person pointed out that they have seen the post, which is a good thing in my opinion, and that they appreciate that this blog like others is a chance for them to see their consumer’s opinions. This person gave me some reasons for the increase in prices, which will be discussed below, but was also offended in the “daylight robbery” phrase.
Just to clear things out, here are two different websites (1, 2)that explain what “daylight robbery” means -
Here is an excerpt from the second one -
Meaning
Blatant and unfair overcharging.
Origin
This isn’t used to describe actual robberies - whatever time of day they might take place. It is a figurative phrase that associates an instance of unfair trading with actual robbery.
So I hope that clears that phrase out. Any readers from my blog know that I rarely offend or use offensive language.
Now back to the main topic, coffee. Since my last post, there have been changes, MANY changes!!
The first main change is that since then, I know for a fact that Caribou coffee raised their prices to be on par with Starbucks. I also know that Coffee Bean raised their prices in Dubai (not sure about Kuwait, and not sure about Second Cup or Costa either). So, in effect, the other stores could have just been waiting for Starbucks to do that so they can follow, since it is by far the dominant player in this market.
Secondly, and more significantly, Starbucks in the US also raised their prices as of October. Since my post was published on Sept 26th, there is an article 2 days later announcing the expected price increase, and another article here written in October about people’s reactions to the increase. Even though the price increase happened in Kuwait first and then the US, I still think that the margin is steep. In the US, the average increase is 3%, in Kuwait, it is more around the 15% average!!
Thirdly, from an article published last week on the Financial Times website, coffee prices have reached a 10-year high. Supply is getting lower from factors such as droughts in Brazil, while demand has been increasing in recent years! My favorite line in the article is -
Traders said the price direction would depend on Brazil’s rains. If the drought persisted, Arabica coffee might jump above $2 a pound. But if it rained, prices would drop towards $1 a pound.
This is probably a good explanation of why all these coffee shops have increased their prices, as well as brands such as Nescafe and Folgers coffee!
Fourthly, speaking of price increases, to make things worse, milk is going through the same price increase that coffee has been going through! There are several reasons for that. One article from ABC News points out the corn based ethanol which uses milk is one reason for the increased demand, while another article picks up on prices of feeding cattle, and more interestingly, demand from Asia!
All the previous reasons are good reasons for increasing prices of coffee worldwide, but why significant difference in price increase between Kuwait’s starbucks and the US chain??
One plausible reason might be that just like everything else here, the price of coffee had to go up regardless of the previously mentioned reasons. That it because of our inflation here. Inflation in Kuwait reached a 12-year high!
Another reason mentioned by the AlShaya representative that I have not considered is the ridicuous increase in real estate prices in Kuwait, which I have to admit is also a valid point. But it did make me wonder as to why did these reasons have to come to me because I wrote this post instead of being shared from the beginning with ther customers in general!?
Anyway, this post is very long, and it took alot of work and research to complete, so I’ll make that my excuse for lack of posts recently
But if there is one thing I really love about this topic, its how the price of the cup of coffee I get from the starbucks near work is directly linked to whether it rains in Brazil this summer or not, and to whether demand in Asia continues because of its growth, and whether the oil prices keeping going up which increases the demand for alternatives such as ethanol! Gotta love this world we live in! Globalization! ![]()

“ME” ANY hot drink (Except Shots) can be ordered in Short size!!! Remember don’t say “Small”, they’ll just give you and charge you for the “Tall” Size. You have to specifically say “Short”
Now the next time you ask for short and they refuse to serve you, just say you want to speak to their manager. That’ll get you the order right away.
I personally order the cappuccino, which is best served in short quantity! If a coffee aficionado catches you ordering a tall or grand size cappuccino, he’ll laugh at your ignorance. The great thing is that the short size cappuccino costs 800 fils! Imagine a starbucks coffee for less than a KD!! I’m not sure how much it costs now.

They’re giving away free iTunes songs with every tall coffee you order, so that’s the extra 99c. To make it up for customers that are mad about the $ increase : P

Ah yes, the complications of being part of the world economy.
In answer to your question about why the info wasn’t communicated to the consumer in the first place: “Most” of us don’t really care about the price of our coffee. Most customers would just order anyway rather than go price hunting… AND they don’t bother to ask why the price went up, so why should the company bother to inform them. It boils down to consumer culture and information demand and supply (in this case the cost of providing the info doesn’t justify the benefit)
I think we all agree though that the best thing that came out of all this is seeing your posts once again… keep it up bro and good luck in your crusade against the enemies of caffeine

your post says a lot about globalization AND global warming. if we’re gonna depend on the rainfall in brazil for coffee, the i dont think we’ll have coffee for much longer. scary thought, but true

I honestly can’t believe real estate prices in Kuwait. It’s only Kuwait, after all.
However, to be fair to anyone drinking (over-priced) coffee in Kuwait… supply and demand economics. If it was too high, no-one would be going to Starbucks or wherever.
But it seems that 1.5KD for a cup of inadequate bitter coffee is acceptable in the local market.
And don’t get me started on the cost of their cookies…. flour prices worldwide must be closer to gold!

Ali, thats a very very good point! Im not an expert in shawarma, but if the prices havent changed in so long, then there is something wrong!
Uturn, are you sure they still provide the short size today?
Loyal Reader, id be happy if they gave us free stuff here in return
Mogendi, thx
and you do have a point regarding the cost benefit of telling people. But it could be done in different innovative ways that dont require much effort! A simple way used by many companies in the US now is blogs! I can guarantee you that the information that starbucks is getting from the comments in the past 2 sections is more important and to the point than most research they pay for, since its a discussion between actual consumers who value the product and therefore willing to discuss it!
Edo Rex, that thought alone is enough to make me go green!
moocherx, lol! The food prices is a whole different topic which I never understood here in Kuwait. You can buy the same cake from bakery A for a fifth of the price of what you get it at coffeeshop A!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Hellos,
I think your question about why the jump in Kuwait was 15% is the heart of the subject. I mean if its good coffee you want you can easily buy the best gourmet coffee from a supermarket and brew it yourself at home. The whole thing would cost a fraction of the price and add multiples of quality.
A coffee cup is a luxury item and the few extra 100’s fils shouldn’t dissuade you from buying your next cup. 3ala golat yeddani ilfloos lageenha bessekka mo farga ma3ahom.
And kuwaitis don’t like to work for their coffee, aro7 ashtere coffee brewer o asawe fresh batch every morning, la o its even worse, I “program” the maid to do it for me? too much work, ta3abt.
If price isn’t an issue for us, why shouldn’t alShaya o ghairhom take full advantage of that? they’d be stupid if they didn’t. i7na korama o ohma yestahlon
man, coffee’s bad for you anyway. 5allek methle caffeine free

The price of a cup pays for rent, brand, electricity, decor and design, and employees. I like the coffee of the day. A regular cup of Starbucks in Wash. DC is $1.50 and in Kuwait its 750 fils.
In DC im pretty sure that rent is the same, if not more. Employee ‘Partner’ salaries are higher. Employee benefits are more expensive than Kuwait. The bottom line is prices in Kuwait started off inflated and any such change in price is just added profits.
Ps. there is no need to mention the premium price of coffee paid to growers or the schools they are building the farmers. thats just community service and everyone does it for tax purposes.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
I already know that they have the “short” size for “some” drinks..but the way u mentioned the info madre i thought ena u meant ena there’re a “short” size for all the drinks..
October 24th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Starbucks is the McDonalds of coffee. It’s pure crap!
And if they have issues with high rents, then they don’t have to open all over town!
October 24th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
if thats the case of coffee pruducts , what about the soft drinks and thier snacks ( croissant,cookies..etc ) . They are raised too!!!!
October 29th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Man they pretend that short size is for kids so that nobuddy goes for it .. and everytime i buy my favorite coffee of the day short size i see the disapointment on their eyes … i am thinking to buy my own brewer at home so i dont need all that headech.
