*UPDATE at the bottom*
So Im back!
I’ve been back for a while but for one reason or another I didn’t start writing on the blog. Unfortunately, the first thing I did write was a result of the sad events that occurred last week, totally not as planned!
Anyway, now that I’m back lets get back to business -
I found this interesting (at least for me and others working in marketing in Kuwait) chart today in AlQabas, which shows the top 10 advertisers in Kuwait so far in 2007 -

I dont understand why they have “tourism & travel” as number 5 when its an industry and not a company, but Im also surprised about MTC being below the three banks, that Mitsubishi is there, and that KFC or Americana in general is not included!
Forza’s question in the comments section about McDonalds spending more than banks led me to some research and I found this, from Advertising Age -

(click on the chart for better viewing)
You will find the rest of the 100 in the the original pdf file of top 100 spenders on ads globally from the website.
Whats interesting is that globally, Citigroup are the largest financial institutions in spending for ads, and they come in 46th place globally, while our banks here take 3 of the top 4!
Another interesting thing in the report is the country breakdown of spending, this is how they have Kuwait -

This obviously cannot be correct! There is no way in hell that Little Caesar spent more than Gulf Bank or KFH in Kuwait!! Yum foods is basically KFC & Pizza Hut, not sure if they added them together or what.
To be honest Im not a big fan of the research company that did that PARC (their website doesnt seem to work), so Im not so sure how accurate that is, I would believe the newspaper one more, although neither chart goes into detail on whether its just newspaper spending on spending in general!

It could be a number of reasons.. MTC has been scaling back in anticipation of launching its new brand, that’s when the big spend will be… I’m not certain but I think the Blackberry campaign was their major spend this year so maybe it didn’t add up to as much spending as the top 10 companies
What I want to know NOW is… who’s going to advertise on the streets and buses now that the rates have been drastically hiked up by “IDEA!”… all I see is their own ads!

Abdullah, thanks! Now i feel guilty for not posting earlier
Zaydoun, the MTC branding makes sense, spending so much on the BlackBerry didnt, but oh well, its their money! I didnt know the new company raised the prices for the outdoor ads, i just assumed its August and demand is so low they’r putting their own shit up! There really are NO outdoor ads at the moment, i took some pictures of empty ad spaces around town, was gonna post about it!

see thats 2 month chart only , it doesn’t tell you much , i wish they would release a yearly one then we could get some solid information
still Macdonald is on a big spending spree
and he is at least spending 6 times as any other restaurant , the question is the return worth it ? because when you advertise more than bank it look bad

Zayoun, MTC/Zain has claimed the IDEA! boards already for their name change.
I also know that international brands like Toyota, Mitsubishi and McDonalnds have an advertising budget that they must spend each year.

Sowhat, thx i missed u guys too
and yeah that surprised me too, especially compared to gulf bank, which I thought was spending less than usual, guess I was wrong!
forza, its actually from January to July, which is 7 months, but ur still right about it not being enough info, especially with Ramadan coming up and all the spending involved there!
As for McDonalds spending more than banks, check out the update on the post

How the hell is McDonalds #1???

Something wrong with these figures dude! Bas again, not that shocked since food companies do their best to make people more obese here!
I hate PARC, I don’t trust their numbers and I usually try to gather info myself, though tough to find sometimes..

And yes, I don’t get why in the last chart Yum groups are way ahead of the Gulf Bank. I don’t trust this research either!
