The amount of spam (in comments) in the past 2 or 3 weeks has been much more than the past 6 months altogether!!
Its starting to get annoying! Anyone know any ways to stop these spam comments?? I know I can block certain words on wordpress, which I do, also there are restrictions on linking on the comments…..
That doesnt seem to be enough, so many commets right now are from spammers but seem to be one liners with no links, why? how does that help them?? Most of the spam is in very old posts but I get them on my email anyway, at least 30 a day, some identified as spam and blocked, some not! Any help? Im not a big fan of the letter verifying thing though …

word verification works like a charm.. i’ve installed it a while back on my WP 1.5 blog .. can’t be considered eye candy.. actually it’s a bit ugly but it works great.. much better than finding my old posts swarmed with all sorts of sex-life enhancements and texas holdem poker links .. if you need the name let me know because I can’t remember the exact name right now

Zeecu, it took me forever to get to ur comment and unblock it bcz u used some of the words i block! lol!
Anyway, if there’s any word verification (which Im not a fan of) that looks decent, tell me plz!

I would recommend Spam Karma, thats what I use on my blog. Its really the best anti spam software I have tried so far. this is my stats… 33,000 spam comments caught so far..
# Total Spam Caught: 33090
# Total Comments Approved: 10704
# Total Comments Moderated: 332

Use the one that already come with Wordpress its in your plugins called Akismet.
Just activate the plugin.
Then get an API Key http://akismet.com/personal/
And insert it and tada.
Works like a charm, and doesn’t give out false positives like Spam Karma.

I dont get any false positives with Spam Karma. You must have tried the older version.
Akismet is very limited, you can’t do anything with it.

As you can see, Akismet has a bad habbit of blocking legitimate comments..
Now whats cool about Spam Karma is you can control how strong you want it to protect you. You also can get a daily email with all the spam its caught that “might” be not spam (has a karma rating of -20 and lowers). Its also very flexible. For example for my recent posts I have Spam Karma set to normal strength. For posts older then 2 weeks I have it set on strong strength. You cant do any of this with Akismet.
Finally, Spam Karma has caught over 33,000 SPAMs with me. That should be enough to prove how good it is.

Ok, so far today alone I have recieved 213 spam comments forwarded to my mail!
I just activated akismet right now, lets see how it works for 2 days…

nibaq, with Spam Karma you dont have to do anything either. It works by default. But if you need more control or more advanced features.. they are just a click away. With akismet you are stuck with nothing.

Nibaq!! It worked! Ive been spamless for about 7 o 8 hours now, which is a record!!
Nibaq, Mark, and K…..none of u answered my question about why some spam is just a single sentence with no links or crap..whats the use??
