Municipal elections were completed earlier today, the elections were historic for Kuwait in being the first time women get to run and vote in an election!
The turnout of today’s by-election was 38 percent while the number of voters was 10,646.
The results are as follows -
يوسف مفلح الصويلح 5436
جنان محسن بوشهري 1807
عماد شاكر دشتي 1165
Yousif AlSuwaileh won the seat, congrats to him. What is really interesting is that Jinan Boshihri got a very impressive second place! A woman getting second place in the first election ever in a place like Kuwait has to be a great motivator for all women in Kuwait! Hopefully this will give many more a chance to consider running in the parliament elections coming up next year!
I wasnt following the election news closely until the results, so I didnt really know what the expectations were for results. Personally, I just didnt think a woman would get this close at all! So basically this made me very pleasantly surprised and optimistic for future elections!

Keep in mind that Mr. Suwalih engaged in a far3iya for 3awazim, so the ~5000 votes he got might be a little over blown. I think he would’ve still won, but Jenan would’ve been a lot closer!

And I’d say good day for Kuwait.

يا هلا و مرحبا بالصويلح..فجي الباب
Mabrook Jenan…a solid second.
Fantastic result given the circumstances.

the important isssue i think is
how many women voted
because that would give us a close idea of who they voted for

Second place is an achievement for Kuwaiti women.
Jinan did good, bare in mind that there were 2 Dashti’s and 2 Boshuhri’s, this didn’t really help.

Technically , Jenan is the legitimate winner. Yousef’s winning is illegal because it was the product of an illegal action/operation.

“very impressive second place”, nothing impressive about being second in anything.

Purg, and what do you know anyway ;P

Q,
Al-Suwaileh victory was inevitable. Nonetheless, Jenan being second will be a good push for female voters & candidates alike in 2007 elections.
But keep in mind, that Dr.Khalda Al-Khether had 79 votes only. So, I think that who voted for Jenan didn’t do so just because she’s a woman, and that’s a good omen.
Now, let’s wait & see what will Ashwag Al-Mudhaf score in The Engineers Society Elections.
forza Q8,
Your comment brought something to my mind.
If we are going to have separate vote counts in 2007, I think this will result in gender-based results that will bring us no good.
Purgatory,
not impressive, but good.
or as Julius Caesar once said:
“I had rather be first in a village than second at Rome”

I don’t see anything changing in 2007 elections; this competition was unfair since Alsuali7 got a previous support from his tribe. I know a lot of Sheat voted for Jihan, not because of her specialty or her agenda (which she rightfully deserved) but because she carried two winning cards; she is a Sheeat and she is a woman (she got the support of her gender). Of which both are the wrong reasons to be the bases for winning an election.
I doubt though that Ashwag Al-Mudhaf will win this election in Engineering Society just because she is a woman. Engineering Society has its specialized atmosphere where everyone knows beforehand what the accomplishments of each are. So I doubt if she would get the support of other women engineers just because she is the only women running for elections. Ya3ni the competition would be more decent.

Congrats!
The women voter turn-out could have been a lot better if word had gotten around that L’Oreal or Mac would be running a promo at the polling stations.
Another strategy would be to give women cell fone or fragrance freebies, and then you’d have got a full house.

According to Fouad Al-Hashim from a few days ago, more women voted for Suwaili7 than Jinan. Could this mean that having women voters doesn’t really change the “shape” of the game?
I was under the impressions that the cards will be mixed a bit this time. Usually shi3a vote for shi3a, sunna vote for sunna etc, and I was wondering whether we were going to see a new ‘category’ which consists of women voting for…women!
Like I said, the massive number of women who voted for Suwaili7 could mean that not much has changed with the addition of women voters. Or it could mean that this phenomenon is more apparent with tribal-influenced applicants?
Jinan did run along with several other 3ayam, but like has been said if there were no sub-elections held beforehand (which decided the runner for Al-3awazim) then you would have seen more 3awazim run beside Suwaili7.
