I love propaganda! I love PR work, and I especially enjoy reading and watching posters from propaganda in the past! The Chinese and Nazi German works are the most famous, and of course there is Iraq’s during Saddam’s era!
The Chinese works always show as a people’s leader, the man who is loved by everyone and who is their saviour and hero, giving them everything they need to be happy!
These are some examples of propaganda posters of the time -

I have this excellent book that has all the posters from the Chinese propaganda minds.
One of the most famous pics of propaganda was General Mao swimming accros the river -

Doesn’t this remind you of another famous picture of a leader swimming??

You guessed it! The one and only Saddam! He took a page from Mao’s book, he actually took alot more, his propaganda team tried to show him not only as a leader, but as THE hero!

In the first picture, Saddam is on a horse holding a sword, heading towards alQuds. He is the Salahuldein, the saviour who brought back alQuds to the Muslims.
Look at the second picture, with Saddam’s face near another face, which is Nebuchadnezzar, the old Babylon king who kicked out the Jews back in the day!
Not too subtle, but to the point, and that was his message, that he is the saviour for Islam and the Arabs, and unfortunately, we have enough idiots in our world to believe that!
All these propaganda posters are very similar and intersting, in trying to get a message through. My favourite form of propaganda has to be the German Nazi propaganda material. Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister then, has to be one of the best weapons Germany had at the time! Their message wasn’t on showing Hitler as a hero, as much as showing the threats from the Jews and the weakness of the other leaders and countries, as well as saying that Hitler’s aim of giving supreme power to the Aryan race was good and that you wanted to be part of that elite club!

As well as Hitler as the giver, growing seeds of peace supposedly in this poster -

Alot of the posters done for Nazi Germany at the time were very cool in an modern art kind of way! Its like a bunch of artists on drugs were doing them -

In this cartoon, the truth on its head when the US is talking!
This, by far, has to be the coolest election poster ever made -

This is from the 1932 elections.
———————————————————-
This could go on forever, but its a taste of how important and nice propaganda is!
In Kuwait, there is alot of this propaganda in our daily newspapers, sometimes its subtle, sometimes its pretty obvious. Especially take notice of AlWatan and how they show Ahmad AlFahad, it really is interesting sometimes!

In addition to newspapers, don’t you just see it in the streets? In every official’s office?
The best was during the period from last Ramadhan till the end of the crisis in January. Remember newspapers dedicating pages for Salim Alali and Naser Alm7amad’s Ramadhan receptions?

No story on propaganda is complete without the following characters:
1. North Korea’s Kim Jong Il
2. Syria’s Hafez Al-Assad (and now Bashar)
3. Egypt’s Husni Mubarak
4. Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi
لاحظ ان ما فيهم ولا دولة سنعة، واحنا ماشين على دربهم بإذن الله

Don’t forget the mother of all propaganda: Leni Riefenstahl..

Art is a strong form of speaking to the mind, it effects even more than words because of the symbolic refrences it might create in ones mind, and the beauty is how to use it in order to bring out different emotions in different ppl in the end serving one purpose.
This is really somethin amazing and just shows u the importance of control and the way PR addressed it.

Q,
Great post. What also interest me are counter-propaganda posters.

interesting subject Q,
Propaganda sometimes morph into other physical & visual things, like:
- hats (china)
- attire/dress (china)
- colour of clothes (cuba)
- haircuts (english civil war)
- moustaches (hitler & stalin)
- beards (guevara, lenin & marx)… etc
Supporter & sympathizers may -consciously or subconsciously- be “walking propaganda posters”.

iDip,
May I add:
-attire/dress (Kuwait - Mini-dishdashas with or without 3gal)
-haircuts (U.S. Marines haircut)
-beards (Kuwait goatee: Al Sabah & hardline symathizers) (Kuwait trimmed full beard: Muslim Brotherhood) (Kuwait longer untrimmed beard: Salafis)
Am I in line with your point? If not just ignore me.

Superb topic Q
Propaganda has been present for a very long time.
One can trace it back to paintings, such as Jacques Louis-David’s “Napolean” riding on his horse through the Alps, when in reality he rode a donkey.
Even more familiar may be the Ancient Egyptian civilization or pieces from Susa, Iran, where you have sandstone victory stele’s of a ruler’s divinity (Naram-Sin).
And I agree with iDip: A beard is a symbol of power. In fact, the copper head of Sargon I’s statue was dismantled and his beard was cut off!

Remember that propaganda is much more useful and made use of in ‘democratic’ societies than in dictatorships which could shut the people up by force!
Edward Bernays, the father/guru of PR in the US who worked with the Wilson administration, stated in his book ‘Propaganda’:
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses,” which he called the “engineering of consent”, is the “essence of the democratic process.”
