We blew away the competition! Kuwait is officially the country with the highest surplus as a % of GDP in the world! Kuwait is in the lead with a whopping above 40%, miles ahead of the country in second place, Saudi Arabia, which is at 25%!!
From AlQabas today -

.
Im surprised at Trinidad & Tobago being 4th, and at Lebanon being the 3rd worst in the world!
My question is, how did they come to these estimates? and what are the actual 2005 figures so we can compare?
This comes a day after the City of Silk press conference and announcement, which I personally think is a huge PR campaign, since its something that has been talked about for more than 4 months (link 1 link 2) but was pushed aggresively recently, to show it as an achievement for the new government!
Anyway, lets hope these estimates come true, and even though we got that only bcz of our oil, and not bcz of any special planning by our government, now there should be more pressure on the government to do some radical changes in Kuwait’s infrasturcture that will be effective for generations to come!

they get these numbers from our GDP planninh
remmber that we always say oil is worth 15 $ in the plan , but its sold for 40-50 $ so we get a big surplus

so u dont think we’ll ever see the city of silk?
wierd name by the way, i think city of pearls would have made more sense, since pearls are more tied into the culture

Is it a good thing that we have the highest surplus to GDP ratio?
Couldn’t it also mean that we have an OK surplus and almost a non-existent production?
Saudi Arabia sold oil for the same price we did, but they have a higher relative production.
I was saddened by that stat quite frankly.

what surplus? I do not see any, and I will never see any. Will you?

kuwaiti_29 - you are talking about per capita income, which is GDP/head sortaspeak. The graph in this post is the budget surplus, ie: what’s budgeted vs. what was generated. Of course, one it comes to petro dollars, they are always budgeted at 30something whereas the market price is +60 sometimes – which explains the variance.
You guys in Kuwait are extremely fortunate for not being forced into funding government projects (show me the last time you had to pay a road toll or pay excessive ammounts of cash for public admin fees…etc).
You are running an engine that’s oiling (no pun intended) itself by itself..

My only concern with these projects is
1. The environmental impact they will have.
and
2. Archaeological ignorance and indifference.
—-
1. Do you think we will have a virgin beach in Kuwait in 2o years time.
Until the mid 80’s, residents of Alzoar chalets witnessed turtles laying their eggs on Alzoar beach. Today there isn’t even a 7asooma in the waters. And now with the Khairan Pearl illegally extending into the sea, the still crystal-clear turquoise waters of that area will probably turn into murky mud.
2. A centuries old church was excavated in Shuwaikh, specifically on Um Innamil Island -if I’m not mistaken- around the time the Free Trade Zone was being built. No concern. No publicity. No responsibility or interest.
They continued by eliminating Umm Innamil Island and attaching it to the mainland.
Purg: Sindibad?? LOL!

Zort, have you seen this earlier post about excavations in Sabbiya?
Its sad that it all goes unnoticed and that it will all be destroyed!

Being an egyptian who had to live most of his childhood and adolescent years at kuwait…I really think that kuwait isn’t really doing enough in getting itself out of the “good oil prices = good budget and vice versa” economy.I mean look at dubai now…they have a budget where oil revenues count for 56%..guess that number would still be in the ninties for kuwait…

4 things I noticed about the project is that..
1. IT IS A BIG DEAL
2. the project is keeping in mind alot of things that kuwaitis complain about daily.. an effort is being put into this project to create something that we say we lack.. examples:
-we’re gonna have a ‘film city’ for advanced film production
-a sports city.. in one of Q’s links u see the architects talking of possibly having the olympics in kuwait
-resorts…yes I do think that like Zort said there will be a strong environmental impact
-but they are keeping inmind the environmental effect in someway by creating a National Wildlife sanctuary as they say
-and a Cultural City Centre will also be created with museums of many kinds..providing archaeological awareness in the area
…Maybe this is all good, but the problem here is will THE PEOPLE, THE GOVERNMENT, deal with this whole project the right way?! or are we going to neglect its huge impact on the area and on ourselves..or are we gonna critisize everything about the project until it deteriorates.. meaning: its against our traditions to have a film city! next thing u know there is no media city and we’re stuck with mabna wezarat le3lam for everything!.
Anyways..
3. if u look closely at the picture with the Mubarak alkabeer tower, you can notice lots of mosques being part of the plan.. This is great, I for one am looking forward to see with what they come up with architecturally.. I hope these mosques are big and look more like the Sharjah mosques rather than the jam3iya ones!
4. Even though there is an education city.. I dont know if Kuwait University is getting a well-rounded campus there lets hope so
Well, thats LONG:p… the link for the architect’s firm can be found here.. it has all the details on the project.. http://www.civicarts.com/
Hopefully everything turns out well and this city does become what many kuwaitis want out of our current kuwait city.. ciao

Great comments on here so far..
Doc, it still is in the 90s
Ba7ar, thx for the link! it really looks good, but I agree with u about the people. We have so many people who will be totally against it and against any progress that it will most probably not go forward smoothly!
