Yesterday, Sheikh Sabah was giving a speech which was broadcast live on KTV with English subtitles.
He started by saying: “ربي اشرح لي صدري”
Translation said: “Expand me my breasts”
Another proof of our ministry of information’s great success! Ya3ny its the Emir’s speech! Get a decent translator!
I dont know whether to laugh or cry…..actually I do, I laughed alot! lol

This is not the only translation mistake in baba subahs speech, (btw I used to call him baba suba7 before he became a baba :P). laken thats sooo typical of us Kuwaitis kel shay ensaweeh 3ala el baraka o sheghelna kella nages I actually gave up on criticizing and talking about Kuwaiti “slip-ups”, I have learned to lower my expectations (although this is not the answer) just to be able to see the beauty in the picture.
THERE IS NO BEAUTY IN THIS PICTURE THOUGH, i have a lot to say about translators in Kuwait’s official offices, i once met one who got the job just because she is a Kuwaiti english lit. graduate! She never took any translation courses nor she cares to take one, she can not speak the language and she barely graduated with Cs and Ds, I am sure that the translators in Kuwait television are no different from the bo6a6 baideyan muwathafat, I am really offended as a translator that such an important speech was not taken seriously. I usually laugh at KTV translations gags but the speech was nothing to laugh about.
NOTE if you “dig” these kind of laughs please tune in to KTV4, they translate (with the same professionalism) musalsalat kuwaitia methel ma7thootha o mabrooka o rgayya o sbeecha

Quran has translations made by islamic institutions
رب اشرح لي صدري
is not something sheikh sabah came up with… it’s verse25 in sura20… look it up
and I don’t think the Ministry of Information has a translator specialized in religious text/scripture
I hope things are clear now.

هذه ليست حالة فردية، بل ظاهرة شاملة…

لو المترجم قضى من الوقت عشرة دقائق ليتحقق من ترجمة الآيات بواسطة من هم اكثر علماً وخبرة، لما وضعنا في هذا الموقف المخجل…

أعتقد حتى لو يجيبون شكسبير حق تلفزيون الكويت هم يخلونه يغلط بالترجمة
الصراحة ما ني عارف ليش يحبون التأليف
من قبل 30 سنه و الهنود المسلمين و الباكستانيين ترجموا القرآن بلغة انجليزية راقية ما ني عارف ليش ما يتعينون بهالترجمات
تدرون أيام الدراسة كان عندنا صدبق ترجم اسم المطربة مائدة نزهه

اعتقد انك تعلم بان المقصود بدعاء اشرح لي صدري هو ان يسهل الله للداعي امره وقدرته علي فهم الامور التي تجري امامه ويبعد عنده الكدر والغمه ، وليس المعني الجسماني للدعاء ، وبالتالي الترجمه بالطبع غير صحيحه وليست سليمه حيث انها لا تعطي المعني الاساسي للمطلوب ، وبكل تأكيد لن يفهم منها المشاهد الاحنبي شيئا وعليه يكون المترجم قد فشل في ترجمة مايريده الخطاب الاميري ، والخطاب الاميري هنا بكل تأكيد يهدف الي تحقيق الهدف المطلوب من الدعاء وليس تكرار اية قرآنيه مجرده.

you know i work in ktv translation department and i tell you i suck in translation , and most of us there suck more at it than i’m but we basicly translate for ktv2 and nowbody watches that , but sometimes they tell us to translate some stuff like this wich air on ktv1 and then it becomes a big deal but i tell ya… there is alot worst that this mistake on ktv2
