I have to say it, the way the government and the leaders in the ruling family have handled this transition is an absolute joke and an embarassment!!
If Kuwait was a company, and something like this happened, it would lose all investor confidence because of the incredibly bad handling of this. Rumours have been going on nonstop for three days, and everybody and their mother was included in these rumours!
I said it before during their Ramadan feud. The situation is now a million times worse because we are talking about the main event!
It is so bad that I heard on the radio (it was Monte Carlo 107.3) that Sabah AlAhmad is the new Emir!!! WTF?! How can they say something like that when it is not even official!?? You know how….because there is nothing to stop them or confirm or dispute that claim!!
Whatever happened earlier today and was broadcast on TV didnt even mention the word ‘Emir’, and nothing can be announced by anyone until an official document مرسوم أميري is issued announcing the current Emir’s stepping down!
Why the hell do we have a ministry of information then?? Why do we have a ministry of foreign affairs?!?
How come our government doesnt have a crisis management plan or team or even consultants to help them through times like this?!? All we keep hearing is انتقال حكم سلس officially and then nothing! سلس my ass!! If this is an easy and cordial transition, id really hate to see what a bad one looks like!!!
I am really pissed off at the way this is being handled!!
End of rant!!

Can we finally put to rest the myth that Subah Al-Ahmed is this great politician whose every move is calculated and planned in advance? This train wreck of a transition has been coming for years and everyone just kept dancing around it.
I’ll give them some credit, there was obviously someone doing a bit of PR in the last few days (even if it was all reactionary).

I woke up this morning to realize that we suddenly have another Amir! I knew that was coming -somehow- so I’m not that shocked.. My brother, he is only 8, asked me this, why did we switch to shaikh Sabah? what happened to shaikh Saad? I didnt have a good answer so I lied, and said “Shaikh Saad in the hospital!!” :

These are NOT rants, they are scenes of a wise outlook.

This all comes down to Arab tendancies of sweeping problems under the rug and pretending everything is fine and dandy until they blow up in your face.

Great posts.
It’s frightening how things are developing. Things should have been foreseen and dealt with as things developed before it reached this state of confusion. It’s a shame to see the Subah family acting like this way. The Kuwaiti people have trusted their rulers for generations and things like this should be more organized. The way the Subah family acting is ridiculous. Things were more organized in the old days more than what they are now …
I believe the respect given Shaik Saad, allah y7ftha, was given through the immediate declaration of him the Emir of the State. Although this immediate shift of power to Shaik Saad was expected as the official regulation after the passing of the Emir. Besides, Shaik Saad has always been beloved and respected and the changing of the title doesn’t count much. We grew up calling Baba Jaber and Baba Saad. They shaped our faith in our country and deepened our love and devotion through their rule all the past and coming years.
What I am surprised at the most is how the government is distributed on choosing the new Emir when the essence of the choosing is very clear. First and most importantly, we need a healthy Emir, someone with respectable knowledge of the State’s affairs, someone with good reputation as an individual as well as in responsibilities, and of course, someone who would hold still the stability through hardships that seems to coming its way.
I am certainly not a politician, but sense does have a rule in such issues. Things are ridiculous. As you have mentioned before, this is an issue that would draw the line for Kuwait’s future as a country locally and internationally. Respect and Sense people …

Q… investor confidence is the shakiest it’s been in ages. The market could nose dive tomorrow
This is patently ridiculous, all the nasty internal feuds have come up to the surface for the whole world to see.. A total embarrassment!

Crisis? What crisis?!

I second Nibaq…well, sorta. Before this happened, I referred to the politicos by their facial features i.e. “The one with the big nose.” I actually talked to my mom about this,”So who’s next?” and her reply was,”Your sister says she heard blah blah…” and your post came to mind. I think the crisis here is that gossiping people are managing the situation, literally. I mean, there’s no source of straightforward information. I guess we’re supposed to sit and wait until someone grabs the bait.

I am not that informed on Kuwaiti politics, but as an outsider, what i see is the elements of a democratic political environment - what Kuwait is going through now is pretty normal, and as a matter of fact, quiet healthy i would say.
I saw the post yesterday evening when comments were still (0) - I wanted to say something but preferred to wait ‘n see what Kuwait’s blogosphere thinks about it.
In most non-electoral systems, the transition of power is usually done in an extremely smooth manner (behind closed doors) and quite ahead of the departure of the symbol of leadership (president, kind, shaikh ..etc).
The fact that the public is involved in the process of transition of power -even as a bystander- is something you Kuwaitis have to be very proud of.
