Brazil call off Kuwait friendly
(AFP) 11 Nov 2005
Brazil has postponed a scheduled football friendly against Kuwait from Tuesday until next year, the Brazilian football federation announced.
The Brazilian and Kuwaiti federations had been warned by FIFA that the match could not be considered an international and clubs were not under any obligation to release their Brazilian players. “For this reason, the match has been postponed until 2006,” the Brazilian federation said. Brazil called up a 22-strong squad to play the United Arab Emirates on Saturday and Kuwait three days later, but several clubs told the federation that they were unable to release their players for the game.
Basically, the game was cancelled because of complaints from European clubs, started by Inter Milan complaining about using Adriano in games that are not important and don’t really help since its a football club against a national team. Other clubs followed suit and the pressure mounted and its cancelled!
The game is is postponed till 2006, so after the World Cup, which doesn’t help here at all!
Now, who’s fault is it? Marzouq AlGhanem and Kuwait Sports Club spent ALOT of money on marketing this event, through TV ads, newspaper ads, online promotions, and so on!
Who will compensate the club for their financial losses?
More than 20,000 fans who paid money for this game, how are they gonna get their money back?! What about all the sponsors!?! 34 companies paid alot of money to have their name associated with the game!
What a nightmare for the organizing committee!
———————————————————
Marzouq AlGhanim just had a press conference which was broadcast live on KTV3, and said that the club will take one of 3 actions -
1- Play against Brazil without the stars
2- Sue the Brazilian football federation
3- Agree with the Brazilian Federation request of postponing the game to 2006
They said a final decision will be made in 24-48 hours. He also said that they will want to know what the people want through some sort of voting thing from 1 of the 3 options through some phone numbers.
———————————————————
I have two comments on the whole thing -
First, its great that they had a press release so quickly! They stopped rumors and got in touch with everyone. This is excellent crisis management!
Second, I totally disagree with the voting system! That is just shifting the responsibility! They should take a decision real quick and stick to it and suffer the consequences!

Since I am not a decision maker in this situation, I can ask everyone for their opinion -

Everytime I go to a sheesha place or a coffee shop, I order the exact same order, and I ALWAYS get a funny reaction from the waiter! And when the order arrives, it surprises them when I tell them that both orders are for me…
I have a personal combination of drinks that I order, and everybody around me thinks its either weird or disgusting….I love it!!
Thats turkish coffee with no sugar and a diet pepsi!
I dont drink one then the other. I drink a sip of one, then the other, then back and forth and so on. The diet pepsi has to be the new blue can one, not the old metal tasting one! Call me crazy, but I think they go together perfectly, plus the perfect caffiene rush!
If u see someone drinking that in a cafe, dont hesitate to come up and say hi!
My friends were discussing this earlier, and were talking about other people’s weird drink or food combos……do u have any?

While driving home today, my radio was tuned to 99.7FM, and I think it was Dr. Labouche or whatever her name is speaking. She was talking about Madonna and her career, and while mentioning her previous albums, she said something about a song that came from her 1985 album, and I quote: “Like a …. you know what”!
She said something about not being able to say the word!! Hold on a second here, the word VIRGIN is considered too much for our dear listeners?!? But songs like Candy Shop are fin?! lol!
What about the show sponsored by Virgin megastore?! Would the word عذراء be considered too much in an Arabic show?! It makes absolutely no sense to censor an innocent word like virgin!
This has to be added to the list of other silly censorship ideas by 99.7 FM! Another great example has to be the one Zaydoun mentioned about the song American Idiot!
Also, I have to add the Bohemian Rhapsody cesorship of the phrase “Bismillah” which they sing as a chorus in the middle of the song -
Bismillah! No … we will not let you go -let him go-
Bismillah! We will not let you go -let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go -let me go
In 99.7 the phrase is replaced with some wierd tones, which ruins part of the song! I wonder, do they censor the phrase Bismillah if sung in Arabic songs? Like -
Bismilllaaaah, Bismillaaaah, bidaaaina wilbaady bism Allah, tiwakkaaal yal azrag 3ala allaah!
Freddy Mercury, the guy who wrote the words for Bohemian Rhapsody was born and raised in India, so the word Bismillah is probably something that was used around him alot early on. Anyway, thats beyond the point, there’s nothing bad in the use of the word in the song, but its funny that its censored in 99.7, although I heard the full version once on 99.7 recently!
I would love to see the official document about which words to censor and how!
