On the first day of my first marketing class back in college, the professor asked us a simple question …. “what are the 3 most important factors in a success of a business?”
Everyone came up with answers, and everything we picked was wrong! Finally someone said “location?”, and the professor said “that’s right, what r the other two?” It took us another 10 mins or so then someone else said “ummm….location?”
“Correct!! Location, location, location!!”
So…..basically location is pretty important ;P
This brings me back to my subject….Subway!

Subway has to be one of my favorite restaurants! Its good healthy food thats fast and cheap! I used to like it in the US, but the Kuwaiti Subway restaurants are so much cleaner and fresher than the US ones!
Anyway, I remember when subway first opened in Kuwait many years ago, around 1996 I think, it opened in old salmiya, near the current Hardeez on the corner. I used to be a fan and went there alot, although being all the way in Salmiya was a bit of a hassle for a quick sandwich! I actually saw my wife there for the first time and fell in love at first sight ;P
Not much after it opened, it closed. Subway didnt last much and not many people knew it at the time! It simply failed! A few years later, it opened again in Salmiya, but I think it was owned by Sultan Center or something (im not quite sure). It also didnt last much!
Then came the new person who brought it over to Kuwait. They re-opened the Salmiya branch and then in Hawalli and then in Khaldiya I think. The Khaldiya branch is open 24 hours, and after a slow start, its always busy now! Try going at around 2 or 3 am, its always full!! I guess they realized that this works! Its open in a residential area and its a tiny place that doesnt cost as much as salmiya or hawalli and is always more busy! Since then they have opened in many more residential areas! I know I have seen it Tha7yat 3abdalla AlSalem, in 3dailiya, Khaldiya, and Shamiya so far!
I just came back from the 3dailya Subway, and it was BUSY! I had to wait for around 10 mins for my turn and had at least 8 or 9 people waiting behind me when I got there! There were 4 people working on the sandwiches so it wasn’t really slow, it was just packed!
What a difference in the restaurant and its popularity now compared to back then! Everybody knows it now and people go there alot! Residential areas meant closer to the people, and being in a jam3iya means the name is always there, and in less than 2 years, its has become extremely popular! My college professor was right, location, location, location!
P.S.- why do people fill their sandwiched with 12039373 kinds of sauce?!?!

they fill the sandwich with 123215465 kinds of sauce to get over the “zfara” of the chicken and/or to get the most of what they payed for the sandwich..

A friend of mine was all for opening a branch in KU.. She’d walk around campus yelling her lungs out:
صب واي .. صب الله عظامهم
Sorry Q, just thought I’d share my Subway story

3dailiya, khaldiya, shamiya!! I must be outdated. Khubry feeh in Salmiya near Alfanar!
Aham shay inna Subway-kuwait has ketchup (L). I wish Subway-US starts serving ketchup and show some caring for customers who don’t mind some unhealthiness
November 20th, 2005 at 2:46 am

Dear Q,
I think people are a little more health conscious… you know the whole Subway Eat fresh! campaign may of hit a chord… But I agree Location, Location. Location..
Plus the sandwiches are nice.. and each one is made to what you like in it.
Truly,
Misguided

I cant agree on “healthy” but i agree about the importance of location ,
my husband used to love subway but that was before he met me,
im known for making the best sandwiches in the world you know
November 20th, 2005 at 10:05 am
wasn’t it subway that had that tvc of 2 guys sitting on a bench eating last year? that tvc must be the worst they could have done. the colors! the lighting! the sandwich looked horrible!
November 20th, 2005 at 10:44 am
geoo….i cant stand the sight of so much sauce in one sandwich!! I dont even like mayo on my sandwich so seeing 5 or 6 dif sauces just kills it for me, and then it becomes a sauce sandwich, no matter what u put in it, u will only taste the sauce!
Shurouq, lol ilmuhim 6ala3teeha min ur system ;P
rampurple, i feel the same about coffee bean being close to where I work!
Baaaaih Jandeef 3ateej!
And ketchup …. Im a big fan of ketchup but not on my subway sandwich for some reason!
kila ma6goog, هل انت تحب سب واي عشان شفت زوجتك فيه؟ , lol hatha so’aaal falsafa, “which came first the chicken or the egg style”! ;P
MC, hmmmmm…..honestly I like to pick something dif everytime im there! But whatever it is, only one tiny line of honeymustard and thats it for sauces!
misguided, I think ur right about the health consciousness! It definitely is a bigger factor now in our culture!
snookie, I think I was wrong in saying I met her there, I actually saw her there for the first time, but we didnt really “meet”! But couldnt get her out of my head since then ;P
welovekuwait, I know u have ur view of healthy food, but trust me compared to what i used to eat b4, subway is extremely healthy! lol! And btw I wont believe u about sandwiches until i try them for myself! We’re neighbors (r we still?), just drop them off ;P
rampurple, yes it was a realllyyyyy disgusting ad! But did u know that the supposedly healthy looking guy in the ad is a football player for the national team? It took me a while to realize it was Khalaf AlSalama in the ad eating the subway sandwich….maybe gettnig a ‘celebrity’ worked?

Q… Thank you so much for your post on Subway. I hope you don’t mind me adding a bit more to your insightful observations. Just for the sake of knowledge and sharing information.
According to Entrepreneur Magazine, Subway has been the No. 1 franchise business and one of the fastest growing chains in the last 5 or 6 years worldwide.
One of the unique aspects of Subway is that its one of the very few franchises in the world that does not follow the “Master Franchisee” model.
Meaning that you, me or anyone on the street can own and manage a Subway.
All what you need is a good location and some capital. Contact the local Subway representative who will either approve the place or not. The representative will also suggest and recommend locations for you if he thinks you have potential for subway startup and the place you do chose isn’t that great..
Once that is settled, the franchiser will do everything with you or on your behalf. Training, planning , budgeting, negations with the landlord, suppliers, contractors, decoration ..etc. You just submit the location floor map and Subway will send you the restaurant blueprints from the US - done and dusted.
Another unique thing about the Subway franchise is that it’s a very inexpensive franchise to own and manage.
It costs about $10,000 only to acquire the franchising license. And it renewable once every 10 years. The only catch is that the royalty fee is about 8% of your total revenue. That’s above the industry standard 5%.
There is also a joint-marketing-fund program that you have to be part of to cover restaurant company promotions.
Logistically, Subway is a breeze to run. It takes about 21 days for the décor to be completed and the cold tray (salad bar) and baking oven usually arrive in 8 to 10 weeks.
Franchisees also don’t have to worry about catering as the franchiser has pre-arranged annual deals with suppliers. All veggies and bread is locally supplied, meat comes from Saudi, cheese from New Zealand and sauces, not sure, but I think from Oman.
Bottom line is, if you have a good location -like Q rightly mentioned – and a relatively small capital, you can be a proud owner of s Subway any day.
(I should’ve got me a job in franchising!)

The Subway that’s on campus smells like soggy cardboard-like bread. It’s not very inviting. I’m more of a “Jimmy John’s” fan.

those million kinds of souces just tells you how healthy Minds cetizens of kuwait have.
Now What about meeting your wife this is intresting share it with us
Back to the subject i agree with location but i still believe a better marketing would work the bizbiz out.. dont you agree?
November 20th, 2005 at 1:33 pm
I bet if you ask your wife about it she would not remember meeting you in subway.
November 20th, 2005 at 1:46 pm

actually the old Salmiya is where mercedes benz and anjari are while the new salmiya is where sultan center is. the reason for that is simply the area were sultan is located is pretty new.
the original subway that was open in the old salmiya near tikka and fay bookshop used to be owned by Sultan Center. There used to Barakat located there before which had really good shawermas. After subway closed sultan opened another fast food sandwich place, something with a logo of a bull or buffalo i dont remember.
i was a big fan of the subway located in the new salmiya (next to johnny rockets) but recently they changed some of their ingredients. Italian BMT lovers will notice that.
November 20th, 2005 at 6:24 pm
Besides being in residential areas and in good locations, put in mind Khalida and 3dailia ( Kaifan is close by) all have college campuses in them. Everytime I’ve been there, it was crowded with univeristy students.
And about the sauces thing, I guess it’s a Kuwaiti thing? Everyone I know (besides myself) put 23480 sauces too
November 20th, 2005 at 7:02 pm
sorry about my last comment, i had to rush into a meeting so i quickly finished it up. here is the continuation:
i was a big fan of the subway located in the new salmiya (next to johnny rockets) but recently they changed some of their ingredients. Italian BMT lovers will notice that. the BMT tastes like crap now. at first it thought it was just met but i went with tivoguy to shamiya branch and he tried it and also noticed it sucked. I did have the subway melt and the turkey breast with smoked turkey, they both were good so i am not going to stick to subway shamiya branch. its sad though that the italian bmt sucks.
speaking of location the subway at souk sharq is like the worst location. first of all when u drive by it the place looks closed, and i thought it was closed for like a year until someone told me the entrace is the other side, opposite the traffic flow. then trying to order a sandwich in the middle of the summer heat is very practical. its tooo hot waiting and watching the guy slowly creatingg your sandwich. i am sure in winter its also gotta suck.

Q,
Now we have to think Papa Johns, Fisrt location soba7 alsalem (aint driving that far!). Second location Jabriya(not bad), but they only deliver to sura, and jabriya which really pissed me off because every other rest in that area delivers beyond those perimeteres..
November 20th, 2005 at 11:55 pm
love it
يوعتني أبي تونا ساندوش ألحين
tell me when they open a branch in jabriya , i hate the hawally one coz u have to park outside blaza mall, go inside, upstairs to subway & i’m such a lazy person to do that .. know what?? i need a drive thru branch in jabriya block 5 , street 7
possible?!!
