Brazil call off Kuwait friendly
(AFP) 11 Nov 2005Brazil has postponed a scheduled football friendly against Kuwait from Tuesday until next year, the Brazilian football federation announced.
The Brazilian and Kuwaiti federations had been warned by FIFA that the match could not be considered an international and clubs were not under any obligation to release their Brazilian players. “For this reason, the match has been postponed until 2006,” the Brazilian federation said. Brazil called up a 22-strong squad to play the United Arab Emirates on Saturday and Kuwait three days later, but several clubs told the federation that they were unable to release their players for the game.
Basically, the game was cancelled because of complaints from European clubs, started by Inter Milan complaining about using Adriano in games that are not important and don’t really help since its a football club against a national team. Other clubs followed suit and the pressure mounted and its cancelled!
The game is is postponed till 2006, so after the World Cup, which doesn’t help here at all!
Now, who’s fault is it? Marzouq AlGhanem and Kuwait Sports Club spent ALOT of money on marketing this event, through TV ads, newspaper ads, online promotions, and so on!
Who will compensate the club for their financial losses?
More than 20,000 fans who paid money for this game, how are they gonna get their money back?! What about all the sponsors!?! 34 companies paid alot of money to have their name associated with the game!
What a nightmare for the organizing committee!
———————————————————
Marzouq AlGhanim just had a press conference which was broadcast live on KTV3, and said that the club will take one of 3 actions -
1- Play against Brazil without the stars
2- Sue the Brazilian football federation
3- Agree with the Brazilian Federation request of postponing the game to 2006
They said a final decision will be made in 24-48 hours. He also said that they will want to know what the people want through some sort of voting thing from 1 of the 3 options through some phone numbers.
———————————————————
I have two comments on the whole thing -
First, its great that they had a press release so quickly! They stopped rumors and got in touch with everyone. This is excellent crisis management!
Second, I totally disagree with the voting system! That is just shifting the responsibility! They should take a decision real quick and stick to it and suffer the consequences!

Since I am not a decision maker in this situation, I can ask everyone for their opinion -

I wonder what is going to happen in UAE? Since they are in the same boat as us, but I doubt they have any poltical gain from this.

mark, Marzouq AlGhanim said that all tickets will be refundable.
nibaq, no its a very different situation with the UAE, bcz it is considered an international friendly game recognized by FIFA, unlike the game here in Kuwait which is between a sports club and a national team! The game is on tomorrow as scheduled in the UAE!

I agree with MRX…if we really want to see a good game..we should bring 2 good teams..Brazil & Nadi likuwait is just a joke..

Play it. Too much was spent on it already. He can make up for it in Hala febrayer as word is already out about bringing reputable teams to play in kuwait.

they should DEFINATELY not sue.. if they do, then we’ll have bad relations with the brazilian football association which will then mean the brazilian team wont step foot in kuwait anytime soon..

Dear Q,
Now.. though I do feel sorry for the organizing comittee.. I must say that they are lacking in leadership.
Such decisions should not be left to fans who may not know all that is involved. Is sueing the brazilian federation a correct action… they may never play us again.. or maybe they’ll ban coaches or players from coming to kuwait.
Should they post-pone… well thats not a choice.. thats a given if you don’t pick the other two…
Plus are we really limited to those two. Is Brazil not going to want to prepare anyway.. could it not include kuwait as part of the training schedule.
Finally, I have never heard of one soccer federation deciding on which players from the other team they want to play… that’s embarrasingly stupid to even bring up.
To be quite honest, somethings just look like a sham from the very begining… who would risk injury to one of their top players before an under-rated team…. so close to the world-cup..
Truly,
Misguided

To sue or not to sue, it has 2 angles imho, the pride angle, and the compensation angle. It probably all depends on the fine print. Was the brazil team obligated by an iron-clad contract? or was it all verbal agreements and invisible nods on the phone? (on the parts that matter ofcourse).
I think they shouldn’t sue, because that puts us in a very disfavorable light. We’re defending our national pride over a soccer match. a bit on the rediculous side if you step out of the box shwaya.

i think they should cancel the game and give the people their money back..thats for now…if they will have another game next year than they should treat as a different game/case
am not a big fan of marzog but i think he did a good job and effort to make the DREAM comes true!
yesterday i was watching channel 3 and everybody was talking about the dream game, dream dream dream ! what the hell is that dream? that u see our clowny players dance on the field and get beaten by the best team in the world 15-0? is that a dream? looll
i think it was a bad idea from the start and now they realizied that its not worth it
marzoog should get his money back from brazilians with a small additional fee, and give the people their tickets money..than go on a short vcation to relax
get back to kuwait and start to think about new ideas:)
good luck in the 2007 election

All I have to say is that it’s not that Marzoog or the Kuwait Team is lacking in leadership! It’s the Brazilian Federation that lacks the leadership since they are going back on an agreement because they are affraid of the European teams which their players are playing for! To me the only reason Brazil is not playing is because the federation doesn’t have the guts to go against the teams that dislike the idea of the game!

Brazil played UAE last night…
Before they even start marketing for that game… howcome they didn’t get approval from all the involved clubs to send their players? If they did… and have proof of approval, they’re good to sue. In fact, they’ll have advantage because one side has been harmed (financially in this case). But I could be wrong and the sky might be green.
