I am sure most of you already heard about this or read it somewhere. Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad, in one instance, destroys everything Khatemi was trying to achieve in the past few years in strengthening ties with the European Union countries! Khatemi’s efforts in international relations and his attempts in creating economic and political relations with countries all over the world took many years and seemed to work to a certain extent.
The best example of the benefits of his efforts is how Iran barely survived the nuclear reactor issue, with alot of help from the European Union!
During a speech in an anti-Israel rally, Nejad said that Israel “must be wiped off the map”!
How stupid was that remark? Not only does he lose any allies Iran made in recent years, but the worldwide reaction against Iran made them even more isolated, with the UN condemning the remarks and the president’s rashness!
With the amount of pressure the Bush administration is putting on Iran, Nejad basically gave them an excuse to do what they want, and gave any other country a excuse to support the US! This was a direct threat to destroy another country!! What’s worse is that if a country like Yemen or Kuwait said that, it would cause a minor problem, but would be forgotten, but if a country like Iran says it, then it is a real threat knowing that they have the nuclear technology to do so!
On the other hand….
Maybe this was going through Nejad’s head and it wasn’t just a remark that came out without thinking ….
Even though it has always been presented as an option, military action on Iran is difficult realistically! The US wont even consider it now that the situation in Iraq is taking much longer than before, and especially with Syria being the next probable target after the whole Hariri situation, Iran is not an option even if they wanted to attack, not enough resources, money, or even support from his people for the country to be in three wars instead of one!
Also, another reason that may give him a bit more confidence in talking with that attitude is that he knows that attacking Iran will lose the US any support it has from many Shiites in Iraq, which is the last thing the US needs at the moment!
I still can’t decide wether its a stupid mistake, or a calculated remark! For some reason I am leaning towards option 1…. I doubt he will be saying stuff like that after more years in the spotlight!
As a side note, what would happen if some of the Friday prayer speeches concerning Jews (not even Israel as a country) in Kuwait were publicized to the international media?!

If it were calculated, it certainly wasn’t calculated enough.
It could also be pulling the good ol’ two faced game: what you tell your people, and what you tell the world are to taken in different prespectives. Remember, we are talking about Iran here, think where does the government get its power base?
cheers

They are rather untouchable at the moment because the US can’t sustain an invasion of that country as well right now. I’m more worried about the long term effects that remark might have on Iran.

why do you assume most of us know? what if I was on a deserted island with no tv (if you are wondering about your blog, I used telepathy, which does not work on tv), so anyways, why?

I don’t know what the heck he’s trying to do. I’m also not sure why he’s so stubborn about it. Even if it was calculated, he’d still feel the pressure from a lot of other countries other than the US.
The man seems to talk directly from his heart. Iranian politicians are trying to play it down but he’s just not cooperating.
I just hope we don’t get dragged into this too

The man has zero experience in international politics. He went from mayor of Teheran to president of Iran in a flash… This will be the first of many stumbles, even the Palestinians have distanced themselves from his outburst

uffffffff this really pisses me off! everytime we see the issue is “slightly” going towards a positive direction for BOTH sides, something IDIOTIC and some half-brained group/person/whatever screws it up..!
Q, what friday speeches on jews? what are they saying in them?

Remember the last “popular” Middle-Eastern leader who threatened to burn half of Israel with his chemical weapons?
Seems like we have a sequel here

Well, the US couldn’t even engage Syria (much smaller than Iran demographically and geographically, and according to the US Security Charter, a much smaller threat than Iran) in any sort of military war if it wanted to.
After the Gulf War, Colin Powell arranged the amount of military resources to be just enough to engage in about one and a half wars. One and a half, only.
No one took in the consideration the resources necessary for “occupation”. The US would never invade Iran. Where would it get the troops? Start a draft? No way. How could it cover all of Iran (in some regions, mountainous and with much desert terrain) in order to ensure that there aren’t “insurgents” popping up everywhere?
There is no way the US can threaten Iran with military might. It’s just not something achievable pragmatically. To take the “easy way out” (a nuclear threat), is also moot, as you had mentioned, now that Iran has nuclear capabilities.
It looks like the “world policeman” is going to have trouble with this “rouge state.”
I think the leader of Iran says what he wants to right now. Why not? He KNOWS the US has its hands tied.
The strong do what they will, and the weak endure what they must (Thucidides). The “weak”, however, are learning new holes they can exploit in the seemingly immense securirty system of the global unipole.

I’m with Shady..local consumption speech..not unusual and not uncommon all over the place.
very stupid, and damaging..but not meant to be realistic.
In an article which Seymour Hersh wrote in the New Yorker last January…he says “In my interviews, I was repeatedly told that the next strategic target was Iran.” he adds “Israel has acquired three submarines capable of launching cruise missiles and has equipped some of its aircraft with additional fuel tanks, putting Israeli F-16I fighters within the range of most Iranian targets”
Read the whole thing here:

Revealed: Israel plans strike on Iranian nuclear plant - Sunday …From The Times, UK last March.
If indeed there are nuke plants and they are hit..which way does the wind blow from Iran?
Lets hope that all sides are using empty stupid rhetoric.

Ok, I sometimes seriously wonder, how can people, let alone leaders of countries be so stupid? Is it naive to call this stupidity? seems to me chenna it is.
Who knows maybe a stupid remark was all that was needed to hit Iran where it hurt.
Conspiracy Theory anyone?

Hardliners in Iran have to throw a “death to Israel” slogan everynow and then.. It’s what keeps them going.
Iran is an Islamic state after all, and Quran is full of anti-Jew verses, no?
October 31st, 2005 at 9:22 pm
A conspiracy theory , like the one that said Sadaam was an american ‘plant’ this whole time, designed to play the role of ‘Crazy Arab Leader who is a threat to the entire Region’ allowing the US to have troops perpetually based on the Arabian Peninsular? Nah.

This is just a political speech for local consumption. It’s like when Bush nominates a conservative judge to please his base. Najad is doing the same, trying to please the hardlines that got him to the presidency. As for the comment “Allah Y3een il 3ayam bil q8,” that is just pathetic. Kuwait in the 2000s is not Kuwait in the 1980s. Time will show you.
