During my first month of blogging last year, I wrote a post about girgai3an, and how it has lost the magic that comes with it!
This is last year’s post -

Girgai3an 2004
When I got home today, I saw a huge group of kids on girgai3an near my place. My first thoughts were, “awww, this is nice! keeping the traditions.”
Then I noticed 3 things that really pissed me off!
* There were 15 kids, and 12 maids!!! (and yes I counted them)
* Four of the kids were on their mobiles!
* Three of kids were being carried by their maids!
What the hell happened to our society?!?
==================================================================
Obviously, it makes sense that things get worse this year, like they always do! But to my surprise, this year’s girgai3an experience looks much more positive to me!
I was driving around in the same area as last year, and saw sooo many groups of kids walking around, and just by luck I had 87.9fm on, and they were playing old girgai3an songs! So the spirit of girgai3an seemed really alive at that moment!
Things I loved about girgai3an 2005-
- The number of groups of kids, at least a dozen groups in the time I was driving around!
- The clothes these kids were wearing, all the little kids with their colored darraa3as and the guys with their dishdashas and ga7aafy!
- Some of the boys had their drums with them! (wain ayaam guwaa6y il Nido)
- I saw a considerably smaller number of maids! Only one group had two maids!
- The thing I loved the most was that I saw two groups with their mother with them!! That definitely was the highlight of the girgai3an observation!
- At least two stations I heard were playing girgai3an songs, 87.9 fm playing old ones, 88.8 fm playing modern ones.
Girgai3an is such a wonderful part of our culture, I hope this lasts forever while keeping the traditions of the past!
O Allah ikhalleeeekum all to ur family and ur family to u o happy girgai3aaaning!

Ahh I miss girgai3an. I remember when I was a kid, me and my cousins got in trouble because we kept on ringing my grandmother’s neighbor’s bell and we knew the grouchy old man didn’t ever have candy; we just enjoyed yelling ‘Wee9 wee9 fee baitkom ja3amee9′ at the top of our lungs. Plus, a lot of houses are targeted now because of their ‘good’ candy, the sort of candy I hide from my little brother (mwahaha!)

yam3awad two groups of fifteen kids 6ayaraw kil il gerge3an. I knew I should have bought that huge Saidawy sack with all the expired candy! We lived pretty well with that.
I also kind of realized that “wee9 wee9 fee baitkom ja3amee9″ has the word ja3amee9 changed to wo9awee9, damn it!

2 extreem girgai3an experiences here Q-
Last Night in Yarmouk while in salon, the workers there were arab women from different parts of the arab world, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, who let in a bunch of kids into the salon and had bags of candy handed to them-it was so cute, and the mogargi3at were colorful, and the mogargi3een as you said dishadeesh o i6bool, o khadamtain, so cute, and appropriate il7imdilah*
As I drove out, a van who was driven by an indian driver had its dabah open 4 guy ages 13-15 were sitting open air, o 6 other guys were jus suspended along the sides holding on to the top of the van while thier feet barely touching the step-I was freaking out, WAIN OMAHAT-HOM? yimkin ib ghabgaat, galbi 3awarniii, fita7t ildireeshah chan agoloohom “7abaybii tara kha6ir!!!”, shradow 3alay??? wa7id gali “6a3 hathi itgool kha6ir, ro7ay ga3rgi3ay a7sanlich yalyahil!!”

About the maids thing, do you really want to have your kids walking around the streets with no adult? I don’t want to. Kuwait changed and is NOT safe anymore. In our family, kids go for gerge3an with the moms. YES, my aunts walk around the streets their little children. I did it last year with the kids. Fun ;P

Of course they shouldn’t go out without adults, but it should be a family member not a maid!
