It blows my mind how yawning is contagious! If someone yawns near u and u dont see them, nothing happens, if someone is 50 meters away and u see them yawning, u have to yawn!!!! If someone yawns on tv u dont get it though!
Its one of those things that drives me crazy! It makes no sense! Why does it happen?? Does the same thing happen to animals? And is it contagious from animals to humans or vice versa??!!?

after looking at the pic of baby yawning - i yawned!
Didn’t happen with the ape though.
Hmm im wondering if it’s cuz i just yawned or cuz i dont get it from animals.
I’ll conduct the experiment tomorrow.

I think it’s just psychological …. but thats just my point of view, I mean it’s the only explanation i can come up with :>

I think the exact reason for yawning is still disputed. It has to do with stimulus-response that develops over time; seeing someone yawning triggers you to respond with…yawning as well!

theres a little segment they put on animal planet with 3 lions that yawn after each other in slow motion.. i guess its the same with animals ;p

heheh, I actually made a presentation in my first year in university about yawning and why its contagous!! just speaking about it made the whole class yawn including the professor (or maybe it was my presentation that bored them!) anyways I don’t remember exactly but i think it was something in the human’s subconshence (sorry about the spelling adree ghala6 o badleyat:P) although there is no clear answer when i researched the topic there were many views!!

I yawned the minute I read the word yawn..didn’t have to see a picture…I yawn when the cat does..

I think it’s to do with your subconscious… When you’re tired, you yawn, so when you see someone else yawning, your subconscious recognises is as “yo, bed time!!!!” and so it forces the yawn out. The subconscious is one strong thingie… fa thats my theory.

I don’t find yawning cute. I find it a bit repulsive. I cringe whenever I see someone yawning without covering their mouths. The yellowish teeth, the mossy tongue…please. Cover your mouths. And keep the noise down while you’re at it.

Yawning is a way to relax the mind, and release the air trapped inside your facial organs, don’t be surprised, it’s true, I heard that in a Yoga class, it exercises all your face and neck muscles and triggers certain enzymes to relax your mind and that’s why you keep yawning before going to sleep, and when your bored, and the more you yawn the better, I don’t know why it’s contagious though but I think it’s nature’s way of reminding us to release our mind from the daily pressures, so people; experience is an asset, keep on yawning and find out for yourselves.
