Thanks to a relative of mine, Alla isaam7a, I am totally hooked to this game called World of Warcraft. He suggested to me when I asked him about a good game, and since day one, I have been addicted!
I have always been a big fan of strategy and role playing games like Civilization and Civilization II, but never liked the shoot-em ups like Doom. So when he told me about this game, I was pretty sure I wont like it bcz I thought it was basically a big online multiplayer fight. I was wrong. Very wrong!
I wont get into the game too much, but basically, Blizzard (the creators of the game), created an online world where u create ur own character and interact with all the other players throughout the game. It blew my mind when I first tried it out as to how the game does not really follow a certain path, but u create it all and its all human based. Also, it does not end, there is no final goal. U can go on forever, and Ive met people in the game who’ve been playing for more than a year.
Anyway, thats not my point. What shocked me was when I read this article about multiplayer gaming, and more specifically, World of Warcraft. Some interesting information -
1) There are two million subscribers to that game, and its not even released in China yet!! That is just incredible!!
2) “Two million subscribers guarantees Blizzard a monthly income of around $3m, or $36m yearly, and that’s before you account for their cut of the retail box’s face price, and whatever expansions may come.”
This is definitely the future of gaming! What a difference between this and between the days of pacman and donkeykong!
The game is sold in Virgin by the way if anyone is interested!

LOL! A few of my friends are addicted to it, for about a year now. Although I’m a little bit vintage in the video games area ( still into pacman and supermario) I might give this one a go.
I think you can get the game online too, but it’s nto free.
Well good luck with building up your character!

pacman and donkeykong is all i can handle in gaming. those 3d games are too sophisticated for me. does that show how old i am?
my only knowledge of that game is the two transactions that appear on my visa every month, paying for my brother’s and son’s accounts.

Hi Q, I have been hearing complaints from a friend about how addicted some of her friends are to the game that they don’t do anything else..just play all day and night…interesting to read about it here..wasn’t familiar with the concept.
August 29th, 2005 at 2:24 am
Hey cousin
(guilty relative who showed the game to Q here)
there’s a flaw in your calculations by 1 less zero. Blizzard is getting around 36 million $ a month. close to a half a billion a year. the whole of the video gaming industry (not just PC, but all platforms included) is about 10 bil $.
And when the chinese servers start heating up. *shudder*

oops. forgot to mention.
There’s a difference between the copies sold at Virgin and the ones sold from the states. The Virgin copies only connect to the European servers. The US copies connect to the US servers.
Which to choose? depends on a few considerations:
1- Friends: Do you have friends who already play on US servers? if yes and you want to play with them, then you have no choice. if you dont care, continue. (me and Q are on US servers incidentally)
2- Timezones: later on when you grow in the game and reach high enough status, you might want to join 40 people “raids” to kill “uber” monsters like a huge dragon or the like. This will be hard for you if you’re playing on US servers from Kuwait, because of timings. so being on euro servers is a plus in this point.
3- Language: euro servers have a higher likelihood of people who cant speak english well (germans, italians, french..etc).
4- Performance/Latency: in an online game, there’s the ever present issue of latency, which is the time needed for an internet info “packet” to be sent from you to the server (like when you press “fire” on your mouse, the game on your computer will send this information to the WoW server so other players can see you perform that action. this time is not negligible. from Kuwait to the WoW servers in the US its usually between 450-700 milliseconds)
I havent tried the euro servers, but this number “might” be lower than the US, however, all major ISPs in Kuwait (Qnet, Fast, etc) have their internet links direct to NY first, then off to the rest of the world. so.. this needs testing.
There you have it
If there’s anyone new in the game and would like so help. feel free to holler.

Just heard about this via LINGUIST. The bit that intrigued me is the suggestion that machines can measure how drunk you are based on prosody alone.

I play this game, in Kuwait I have SHIT latency, 500minimum to EU servers, 500 is BAD - if you play PvP you are likely to get raped by noobs because they have the advantage of having lower latency. MAX latency should be around 200-300. BTW.
