Dj Maha from 99.7 RKFM was mentioned in the post as the best Dj in Kuwaiti radio, and in the comments there was some sort of agreement about that. So, Kuwaitism decided to send her a few questions to get to know more about her.

I personally think that she brings something very unique and distinctive to the airwaves in Kuwait, and she deserve more recognition! Her taste in music very interesting, and it shows in her shows, not mainstream at all!

Catch Dj Maha’s show, Late Night Lounge, which is described as a laid back hybrid of techno and jazz. The Late Night Lounge is a one hour special show featuring the best of world fusion, chillout, chillhouse, ambient house, acid jazz, ambient break beats and more! It’s a live show on Friday nights from 10 – 11 PM. Described as “pretty good tempo” without being ” too clubby”.

To the questions -

1. Why did you wanna be a D.J? And when did you first start this career?

Well it started at college where I would play music at parties for friends. I loved it so much that I thought ‘hey I could get paid to do this’. After graduating I came back to Kuwait and through very good connections thanks to my uncle I landed a job at the MOI. In 2003 I trained with Vicky. In November of that year they felt that I had something to offer and gave me my own show.

2. How was the reaction of your family when the knew their daughter wanted to become a D.J?

My mother Bless her, loved it! she was the one that encouraged me to go for it. All my family have been supportive Alhamdillah :-)

3. Being a D.J, do you consider it as an actual career or is just a hobby that is temporary?

Good question because it is how you treat it. I don’t take it for granted and I think if you have a passion for it, it could become quite a lucrative career.

4. What do you think of the decision to allow private radio stations to open? And how does that affect you as a DJ?

There is nothing like healthy competition. And it’s about time.

5. Where and what did you study?

I studied in Cyprus and Have degrees and Mass Communications and Art.

6. Is there any particular kind of music you prefer? Who is your favorite?

All kinds really. But I tend to prefer the non mainstream stuff. If it’s weird, quirky and beautiful all the better.

7. Do you play any instruments?

No. I did take clarinet lessons in high school but that was short-lived unfortunately.

8. Do you listen to Arabic music as well? If so, whom do you listen to?

Mohamed Abdulwahab, Fairouz, Souaad Al Massi and North African Rai music.

9. What was the weirdest/awkward situation you’ve been in while you were on air? (from Bo_ghazi)

The worst thing that could happen to a dj is dead air and I had plenty. Nothing weird ever happened.

10. If Bo_Ghazi got married, would you be the D.J in his wedding party? (obviously from him)

He knows the answer to that one ;-). Just say when and where :-)

11. What do you think of pengiuns? (another weird reader’s question)

I’m guessing it’s from Purg.. they’re Cute hehehe

(LOL, she knew it was purg without me telling her it was! So she reads blogs Im guessing!)
