Not many of you may remember this, but back in November, I decided to boycott the monopolizing disrespectful company called KNCC. For a full explanation of why and so on, check out this long discussion at Zaydoun’s blog back in Novemeber.
I have to admit, I was tempted more than once to break that boycott, and if you’re gonna comment and say something to the effect of me boycotting wont affect the company, then my response is I dont care! I still believe that company doesnt deserve a single fils and although it wont change anything, im sticking to my principals!
To be honest Im proud of myself for holding out so long. I love going to the cinema, used to go as often as i could. Some decent films have come and gone but I still stood firm! I was lucky that I was in Qatar when Star Wars “Return of the Sith” came out so I was able to see it there. It nearly caused me to break my boycott seeing everyone happy and talking about it!
Anyway, I heard alot about Batman Begins, mostly good stuff! I knew it was out in Kuwait, and I really want to watch it!! But I still refuse to give my hard earned money to them. I reached my weakest point 3 days ago, while passing by Laila Gallery, I craved a good movie and popcorn and all that, and suggested to my wife that we go. She said its up to me (she has been more than great about this boycott thing, totally understanding and didnt complain not even once about wanting to go!). So I thought about it a while and realized that we would be very tight on time since we had plans later. As soon as I said lets forget about it, I got a phone call from a weird number. It was someone who had 2 invitations for me to attend Batman Begins at Fanar as part of an MNet promotion! Zaydoun had a post about this event last week, so I guess they did it again!
How lucky was that?!? I get to watch the movie finally, and without paying a cent to KNCC!! Technically, I am still on boycott, but when I get an invitation from a friend, its impolite to refuse, right?! ;P
I didnt even buy popcorn or drinks or anything from them!! As soon we left we got water! hahahahahahahaha!
OK by story is over, now for a few comments about the movie and the event. The movie is EXCELLENT! It is extremely dark and creepy and a perfect Batman movie without any childish elements! As for the event, the invitation was really elegant and nicely designed. It said 6:30pm, my wife and I and another group were the only people inside the theater at 6:30! The show didnt start till 7, which is ridiculous! Made us waste half an hour and messed up plans we had for later!! Even at 7, people were still strolling into the theater!! And plz dont tell me u put 6:30 so ppl come at 7! That is just stupid and disrespectful for people who actually have the decency to come in time!
The worst part of the evening was that the theater itself was basically a fridge! The temperature could not have been above 15 degrees! So imagine the first half hour of waiting, plus the 2 hours and 20 mins of film time, I left the theater with no feelings left in my nose or ears! CRAP company!
MNet on their other hand are a good company, and they were nice enough to invite us and they deserve a free ad here

The cold air-conditioning is the reason behind my boycotting of KNCC.
I left a movie once because of it and decided not to go cinemas in kuwait.

You have pointed out an essential point ( AC temp) in most of KNCC theatres, the air conditioning system shocks every visitor. Most of us carry loads of jackets, scarfs,…etc to avoid the freezing tempreture.
Lets hope a member of KNCC reads this and takes immediate action.

Q,
I’m with you 110%. The 2.5 KD is just a rip off.
What’s your alternative? I’m asking coze i’ll be looking for one when I return to Kuwait. My planned alternative is:
1. Big screen TV at home.
2. Surround System.
3. Home-made popcorn.
4. High Quality DVD’s.
Where can you get good, up to date DVD’s in Kuwait?

Hi Q;
Just incase you forgot as usual “Eat raisins (زبيب); they are good in improving your brain functions especially memory” :p
As for your post; I enjoy watching Movies from DVDs that I order from Amazon.com more. I asked my dad to put a big screen in my private living room in our new house to enjoy watching my DVDs and no need for KNCC o `3eerah.

shosho, good! whatever the cause is for u to boycott KNCC, im happy!
condfused, why dont u also take action? boycott!!!!
Reema, boycott alla isalmich is مقاطعة, ya3ny nafs boycott of American products 2 years ago in some places.
Jandeef, it really has nothing to do with the 2.5KD in my case, if u read the first link to zaydoun’s post ull understand why i lost all respect towards the company! Alternative is simple - everything u mentioned, thats what I do and Im enjoying it alot! And other than amazon, I would say go to Hawalli and only get a movie if its already out on DVD.
forza, I didnt see star wars in KNCC, i saw it Qatar! as for batman, I used their cinemas but didnt give them the pleasure of getting my money, and I went only bcz I was invited
TF, LOL! walla 3adil shughlich, o always invite ur friends tell them also not to go to KNCC let them enjoy ur private living room ;P

I have boycotted KNCC long back, may be four years, and as an alternative I usually have a movie night at my place; at least once a week, inviting some friends with a light meal and drinks, I get my movies either from them or from Amazon, and they are usually good movies that are worth watching; most of the time recommended by others, and some are from the reviews I get from the bloggers, and I really enjoy that coz after the movie is over we’d sit around and discuss it which makes the night even more exciting.

Q,
I got ya. For the things mentioned in the links you provided, the 2.5 KD is a rip off. That’s what I meant =)

I set up a home theater to avoid having to go to the cinema. It’s a much cooler experience IMHO; chilling on the couch, sipping on Chablis, munching on sushi, total silence, pause the film at will; you can’t get that at KNCC. Thank you, but I’ll wait for the DVD

Well I’m easily influenced.. A couple of more posts like this one and I’ll join the boycott.

I once walked into Zara to buy a sweatshirt in summer, just so I could go into the cinema and not freeze. It was spur of the moment, otherwise I would’ve brought something from home.. which is what I do now
Some are better than others though.. the A/C at Marina and Kout is OK. Fanar, Sharq and Laila Gallery are freezing.
