I usually dont post anything until I think the earlier post took its deserved time, but since the earlier post is more of a one line advice thing instead of discussion, ill make an exception this time. I also think this is interesting, and would like to see what you think.
I recieved an email forward from boghazi earlier today titled FW: Modern History, so I opened it, and what do I see?? I see the four ads that I posted here on Kuwaitism!
I had mixed feelings seeing that! On one hand, I am flattered that I am being used as a reference and copied in a way. On the other hand, it annoyed me that there was no mention of Kuwaitism or the source of the pictures!
I know this may sound weird, why would I worry about such a thing? If I posted it here, then it must be for the general public, right? Well, yes. BUT….I did spend many many hours finding these ads and scanning them. To be honest, my feeling of annoyance has overshadowed my feeling of being flattered, so I decided that, from now on, I will try to keep my copyrights by putting my address on all the pics that I scan!
Am I making too big a deal out of nothing? I want to know what you people think about this Kuwaitism copyrights dilemma!

Add a small “KUWAITISM” stamp on the top corner of any image you post.
And I recommend you post a letter on your blog to that person who stole your adds. He/She might be one of the blog’s readers!!!

April 12th, 2005 at 11:19 am
I am not :), ignore the last words those were teasing .. dude (surfer jargon :P), the rest was a real question. If you do notice, throw me a fish.,

It isn’t your property so you can’t stamp them, some other designer/company made those ads and techinally still own them.
Also what stopping someone from just remove your Kuwaitism stamp from them then you dont have that mark on it.
It is the internet and things will get copied redistributed and so forth, no matter what you do.
Yet isn’t that your orignally intended when finding and posting these these lost gems and isn’t that what is happening with it when its being shared via email?
So just keep posting them you have the orignals and also enough viewers to your site knowing that you got them first.

Q,
I just got that email…
They did a great job with the cut and paste..without refrencing your blog…stealers!
love B
April 12th, 2005 at 11:38 am
He/She ought to have referenced to your site; After all it had taken some efforts to compile them.
April 12th, 2005 at 12:48 pm
well nibaq , the copyright issue is big mess in the internet if you ask me .
but there is something called common courtesy , something that been missing in the arab world for some time , and that why you see people steal other people article and call it their own
oh and i’m Q had good intended for posting , but he did make an effort , and when his effort isn’t recodnized , its just poor ethics
April 12th, 2005 at 1:06 pm
You’re expecting respect for copyrights in a country that has a small stationery shop in Hawalli called CNN?!
PLEASE!!!
April 12th, 2005 at 1:37 pm
Nibaq, I beg to differ, because he is not saying that he owns the actual ads, but the copyright, (or so called one, because it’s not copyright in the literal sense), is for the actual photographs that he took with his own camera.. Again.. not the ads, but the pictures that should have been referred to Q’s blog..
April 12th, 2005 at 3:35 pm
It should just be common courtesy to reference the blog…but don’t know if you can do anything about it.
Zaydoun have you seen the supermarket in Hawalli called ‘planet hollywood’?
April 12th, 2005 at 4:02 pm
q,
with all due respect, your annoyance does sound a tad bit egotistical to me
for all you know, the guy that forwarded the email could have coincidentally stumbled upon those same ads and photographed them himself. you don’t know for sure he got them from your blog!!
a copyright is only valid when an idea/intellectual property is absolutely uniquely derived from you intellectually, not manually. a photograph of something that is available, yet not easily accessible, does not apply to this right!
*however** it would be curteous of that individual to reference your blog if he did indeed upload them from your website! a kuwaitism stamp in that case would prove to be effective

Your post reminded me of a joke I heard some years back:
A director was searching for a sound clip to add to a video clip of an individual stealing a bank and he chose pink panther’s. But then he changed the scene to a group stealing a bank and as a result he had to change the sound clip, what do you think he chose?
The Kuwaiti national anthem.
We have a lot of 6ab6abai graduates around us dude.

For better understanding of copyrights.

Ok, Im glad we have a really good discussion here, and Im happier that we have opposing points of view.
Im happy that most agree with me in that there is something for me to get annoyed at, but nibaq also had a point regarding the copyright issue, in that I do not own this stuff, someone else did in fact create the ads.
I think before I go any further I need to clear something up.
I am talking about the ads that were used. Luminous, the chance that someone else got these ads and sent them as an email is near 0. because, the 4 ads in the email are the 4 ads that i posted in a series of old Kuwaiti ads. The reason for me saying that whoever used it mustve taken it from here is that I have literally spent many hours working to get these ads. I spent many hours at different archives and private libraries looking for these ads. I also spent a significant amount of money on this project, acquiring the appropriate equipment, buying old magazines, buying old ads, old books and so on. But mostly its a matter of time and effort.
Do you know how long it takes to go through 100s of magazines and finding specific ads and then scanning them one by one takes? Multiply that by alot and it makes more than u think!
I have more than 200 ads now, all from the 50s, 60s, and 70s! The ones I posted were just a small sample, and ones that I thought were worth showing.
I hope this explains why my annoyance isnt a “bit egotistical”!
Also, I agree this isnt my copyright. But I also know that this stuff will be very hard to find at this quality anywhere else.
I decided that if I post any more old ads, I will include a small “posted at kuwaitism.blogspot.com” thing at the bottom.
hmmm…so? Any thoughts?

Dear Q,
I apologize for copying the adds from your blog and sending them as an email to 20 of my friends and work colleagues.
You are right that I should of have mentioned your blog (I usually do that, but didn’t think about it when I emailed these adds, since I emailed it from work and was in a hurry! and this is not an excuse!)
I also want you to know that I didn’t say that these adds are mine or I looked for them in old newspapers and magazines! and I have some of my friends who were amazed by them came to my office and asked me where I got them from, and I directed them to your blog.
Well, I really don’t know what I can do to fix this, but I already left home after reading your post and went to work so I can access my work email (I am on my vacation!) and I emailed the adds again to the same addresses and change the subject to (Modern History-Please Read) and I wrote the following msg:
“Gowa all,
I just want to mention that these pictures were taken from :
http://kuwaitism.blogspot.com/
(I apologize for Q for not mentioning his/her website)
Regards,..”
Let me know if there is something else you think I should do.
I was really surprised by some of the replies you got to your post.
And was really disappointed to read words such as (stole, stealers!, We have a lot of 6ab6abai graduates)
Its sad how few people have no problems making an easy judgment on others!
Bo ghazi… I am afraid that your “inspector Gadget” is khwarah
April 12th, 2005 at 6:55 pm
Autumninny, hey atleast I was right when I said your one of the blog’s readers
And I think its a nice thing you did by re-sending the “modern history” e-mail to those who recieved it in the 1st place & mentioning Q’s blog.
ummm…. so purg…. you still need an internet inspector on that penguin’s copyright issue :-P~~
April 12th, 2005 at 6:56 pm
Autumninny, r u serious? Was it really you?
If so, please allow me to say that you are one of the most decent people for posting that!
And please dont forgot the first part of my post. I am very flattered for the usage of the ads from my blog.
There is no need to do anything to change the email, dont worry about it.
Now Im feeling like an idiot for being annoyed at someone who seems very decent :/
At least u created a good subject and post, thx!
Ive been braindead for a couple of days!
April 12th, 2005 at 7:00 pm
bo_ghazi of course, I want to sure my penguin empire is protected. You are hired as minister of Penguin Protection.
April 12th, 2005 at 7:30 pm

April 12th, 2005 at 7:35 pm

April 12th, 2005 at 8:19 pm

April 12th, 2005 at 9:27 pm
hahahahahaha
April 12th, 2005 at 10:09 pm
Q,
I loved those posts and appreciated the time and effort you put into finding those ads. You did deserve to be mentioned so don’t feel bad about your reaction. I would have felt the same way you did.
Gigi, empathetically
P.S. Autumninny, it was sweet and brave of you to take responsibilty and try to rectify the little slip up
By the way, may I ask where you work?
P.P.S Why do I only see posts days after they’re posted?! Damn dial-up!
April 13th, 2005 at 12:20 am
Do you have permission to use these ads on your blog anyway?
You should cite/make a reference to their original source.
April 13th, 2005 at 12:40 am
Hello!
They’re ADS!
They’re meant for distribution, aren’t they?
Q is doing those banks and other places a service
Gigi, contentiously
April 17th, 2005 at 5:41 pm
Autumninny
I guess you’re not the only one who made a mistake, and I owe you an apology.
April 25th, 2005 at 12:11 pm
What a load of drama!
Q, the pictures are not your copyright, by scanning them you are INFRINGING copyright laws yourself… so dont be so quick to jump on anyone that happens to forward them…
