Again, like I said before, ya bakhatkum feeeh!!

This picture was taken when I traveled to Thailand in 2003 with some friends.

We went to Phuket only, and it was gorgeous! Most of it was like being in a dream!

Anyway, my brain is on pause for the past few days, so I figured I might as well just post a picture.

I took this on Phi Phi Island, where they shot Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie, The Beach.

This is a merged picture obviously, so you will have to click on it to get a better view…..enjoy!

From AlQabas, first page….

What a waste of newspaper space!! Absolutely useless!! Ya3ny his decision on women’s rights is “waathi7 wa saree7″, bes still “ladaih makhaawif!!”?!?

Yaaa akhy if u have a decision thats clear and straightforward, a simple yes or no would be perfect! Why the dancing?!?

First line: لم يكن يوما ضد حقوق المرأة

Then: أن رأيه في مسألة الحقوق السياسية للمرأة واضح و صريح

Last line: لديه مخاوف في موضوع الحقوق السياسية للمرأة و مشاركتها في الانتخاب و الترشيح

In other words, the guy is first NOT AGAINST (but not for) women’s rights, then he’s SURE that he made a decision, finally he says HE’S STILL AFRAID about making a decision!!!!

Thank God we have such leadership for our glorious parliament!!

I like this tree!

I criticize alot of things about this country, but to be honest, the baladiya has done a really good job in the past few years when it comes to making Kuwait greener! Thats the comment you hear most from people who have been in Kuwait a long time before and recently came back!

Job well done! :)

How many of you have ever been to the Kuwait National Library?

I have, today actually! In my ongoing quest for Kuwaiti ads from the past, I decided to check the National Library’s archives, which is located near Souq AlMubarakiya, right behind “gahwat BoNashi”, near Qirtas Bookstore. So I went with a friend, and this is what happened….

We entered the main entrance, walked in, there was a desk which seemed to be the information desk, it was empty, with no signs anywhere, so we continued walking in. In the next room, there is a shelf in the middle, a door on the right, and many many books on the floor on the left. On the far right, we found two men working on a table or something, so we asked them where exactly do we go for the books, there didn’t understand Arabic or English, so we gave up and just wandered in to the door on the right, we were lucky and finally found the library!!

To be honest, the library is pretty decent, although the library in my university was at least 10 times bigger. We found a desk on the side with two people in it. So I asked one of them if they have an archive of old newspapers and magazines, he said he’s not sure, and I should ask the other guy who was on the phone.

While waiting for the other guy, we asked the first guy about their opening hours, and he said: “we’re open from 8 am - 2 pm, and then from 4 pm……wait, let me check….(turns around and asks the other guy just as he finished from his phonecall)…fee dawaam 3asir??”
Other guy: “hmmm…..ilmafrooth feee bes il muwathafa maa ityiy so ma nifta7!!”
First guy (trying to iraggi3): “eee maakhtha ijaaza!”

How nice, our National Library closes during the day because the “muwathafa” stopped coming!?! I’ve seen Baqqalaaat that have a more efficient system than this!!

Anyway….back to my quest, so I ask the second guy about the archive, and he answers, “eee ako archive, (Im happy now!) but its on microfilm.” Fine, microfilm is ok, I dont mind that! So I ask him, can I check it out??
He answers: “laaa walla the machine maalat il microfilm doesn’t work!”
Me: “3ayal shloon al7een??”
Him: “mako walla, ta3al marra thaanya lamma insalli7ha”
Me: “Min mita kharbana?”
Him: (and I quote) “Min sinat yaddy!! Gabil kaan il printing kaaan kharbaan, al7een 7atta ilmachine to see it kharbaana!”

We left.

End of story.

I just posted this before then deleted it because I could post again on my own blog….But as soon as I did that, and tried to comment on another blog I got the same error message again!!

It seems that it takes forever to post a message nowadays on blogger, and now everytime I try to post a comment on any other blog I get this message -

hmmmmmm…..is it just me or is this happening to anyone else??

I know this is a bad copy, but this is the best I could find!

During my search for ads from the past, this picture from a daily newspaper in 1972 grabbed my attention!

Its a picture of Tom Jones being kissed by a fan in London….

Text in Arabic -

Caption: توم جونز يلاقي لدى عودته ترحيبا لم يكن يتوقعه

After that, it just says that Tom Jones was surprised when a fan in Heathrow Airport kissed him instead of just asking for a signature after arriving.

What would happen if something like that was published today?? Our youth will turn into sexual maniacs and start humping each other like bunnies….right? Our parents saw that and turned out alright, sa7?

These are sad times that we live in … *sigh*

Since my last few posts have all been political, I decided to take a break for a while and attempt to mix things up a bit….(and for u purg!)

This is one of the ads that Shurouq (God bless her) sent me last week, following my request here.

The reason I am aiming to collect these ads is because they’re like windows to the society and popular culture of the time. Its the kind of history that you wont find in history books or musalsalaat….

Let me explain further….Look at this ad….and put in mind its from 1969!

Now lets analyze it.

First of all, by reading the text, you will realize that its basically an ad for an outdoor barbeque by the pool, with live music. We’re in 2005, and live music is basically banned by our wonderful Islamists! Can you even imagine a hotel attempting to do an outdoor pool barbeque with live music nowadays??

Second, notice the drawing in the ad. Do you see the woman in her bathing suit? and the other woman on the right with a bikini??? 36 years ago, you could use this image in an ad, now ud be thrown in jail! Also, this means that at the time, this was considered normal swimming attire! Also, the cups in the picture wouldn’t be there unless they were telling you that alcohol is available! Otherwise, why use so much of the picture space for cups?!

Third, if we continue reading further, you will notice the price for the evening. Its 2 KD for dinner, service, plus renting a locker for swimming!! So basically for half the price of one roll of sushi, you get all that!! Again, remember this was back in 1969, so 2KD was alot more valuable than now….but again, you get some sense of the inflation that happened since then from the ad!

Anyway, thats it for this ad. If you have any more comments, please feel free to add them. I hope some of you would appreciate my love for these old ads after this brief analysis. You can learn alot about the popular culture of the early days from a simple advertisment!

And you say you don’t have enough rights!!

Women are so lucky, you have all the advantages…..so stop complaining and asking for your rights!
