I know this is a bad copy, but this is the best I could find!
During my search for ads from the past, this picture from a daily newspaper in 1972 grabbed my attention!
Its a picture of Tom Jones being kissed by a fan in London….
Text in Arabic -
Caption: توم جونز يلاقي لدى عودته ترحيبا لم يكن يتوقعه
After that, it just says that Tom Jones was surprised when a fan in Heathrow Airport kissed him instead of just asking for a signature after arriving.
What would happen if something like that was published today?? Our youth will turn into sexual maniacs and start humping each other like bunnies….right? Our parents saw that and turned out alright, sa7?
These are sad times that we live in … *sigh*

I have it on good authority that this picture is the reason many men now forget or are late to family functions such as weddings and funerals.

Allah, who remembers Tom Jones’ variety show, every Monday night? Watching it was my excuse for going late to bed. Even some of our pop singers of that time used to mimic his style - in holding the microphone, not his wild gyrations!
I remember sometime ago reading in Al-Qabas excerpts from declassified British intelligence reports from Kuwait at the time, and in one it was suggested that Tom Jones was so popular among the Kuwaitis a businessman was seriously considering holding a concert for him in Kuwait.
Even today he is still popular, and while I don’t particularly like his music, I find it nostalgic. I just checked my iPod, and I do have some of his tracks.
Now, Q, do you or any of the readers recall the newspaper Extras (=“Mala7eq”) of that time?

Purg.,
This is a new one – just like “Momma told me not to come”.
His oldies but goodies include :”Its not unusual”, “Just help yourself”, “whats new, pussycat” and the one everyone seems to remember: “Delilah!”

This is truly a hilariously amazing picture.
“Mama told me not to come” and “Sex bomb” are his best songs in my opinion, irresistable.
Did anyone see him in the ridiculous yet too funny movie “Mars Attacks” ?

MrsBakerQ8,
Affirmative! A hilarious spoof on the Sci-fi B-Movies of the 1950s - and he played himself in an alternate reality. A few years ago he spoofed himself again in a Red Nose Day special, this time with Lenny Henry (instead of wearing the red nose, he used it as a codpiece!).
So, do I take it that none of you people remember the Mala7eq”, with all the colorful racy picures? Q, bro you should make it a major part of your mission to locate such gems!

Q: The mala7eq” had their heyday in the mid-1970s. As far as I remember, all newspapers had them. They featured pictures of scantly clad women (actresses and what have you), sometimes even less.
Al-Qabas in those days had a comic book like Mul7aq” (=”Al-Qabas Alsa3eed”) every Sunday, it was full of humor that was often risqué.
If it is hard for you to find references for them, probably its because newspaper publishers treat them like skeletons-in-their-closets
