Since my last few posts have all been political, I decided to take a break for a while and attempt to mix things up a bit….(and for u purg!)
This is one of the ads that Shurouq (God bless her) sent me last week, following my request here.
The reason I am aiming to collect these ads is because they’re like windows to the society and popular culture of the time. Its the kind of history that you wont find in history books or musalsalaat….
Let me explain further….Look at this ad….and put in mind its from 1969!
Now lets analyze it.
First of all, by reading the text, you will realize that its basically an ad for an outdoor barbeque by the pool, with live music. We’re in 2005, and live music is basically banned by our wonderful Islamists! Can you even imagine a hotel attempting to do an outdoor pool barbeque with live music nowadays??
Second, notice the drawing in the ad. Do you see the woman in her bathing suit? and the other woman on the right with a bikini??? 36 years ago, you could use this image in an ad, now ud be thrown in jail! Also, this means that at the time, this was considered normal swimming attire! Also, the cups in the picture wouldn’t be there unless they were telling you that alcohol is available! Otherwise, why use so much of the picture space for cups?!
Third, if we continue reading further, you will notice the price for the evening. Its 2 KD for dinner, service, plus renting a locker for swimming!! So basically for half the price of one roll of sushi, you get all that!! Again, remember this was back in 1969, so 2KD was alot more valuable than now….but again, you get some sense of the inflation that happened since then from the ad!
Anyway, thats it for this ad. If you have any more comments, please feel free to add them. I hope some of you would appreciate my love for these old ads after this brief analysis. You can learn alot about the popular culture of the early days from a simple advertisment!

The guy in the picture resembles something out of a comic book (Bruce Wayne)!
Somewhere I have pictures from those days, let me see if I return home I might publish them (after hiding the identity of the participants!).

March 9th, 2005 at 3:15 pm
When i was a kid, my dad (RIP) used to take us swimming at the Hilton pool… one day I almost drowned and my dad - who was a heavy smoker at the time - jumped in to save me and almost drowned himself because he was out of breath!
He quit smoking that day..
March 9th, 2005 at 3:54 pm

على الأقل ليتم تأريخ هذه الفترات إجتماعياً..
March 9th, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Shurouq, u thought right! Actually I picked this one bcz its the easiest to analyze…
Rasheed, inshalla thats my idea! Dont steal it ;P
Im working on it, collecting old Kuwaiti classic ads and hopefully will put a collection in a book to get the unwritten history of the times!
I would appreciate any contributions to add to my collection
March 9th, 2005 at 9:46 pm
Q: I don’t think you’d be interested in my picture as a baby unless you need it for the most handsome baby boy in the universe contest! Oh, you mean pictures of such occasions! No seriously, pictures and 8mm of events such as the one in this retro ad. Also, Christmas celebration events at Al-Ahmadi. Man if only I had time to digitize my whole collection before they fade away or get lost.
Zaydoun: Allah yer7am el-waled, a powerful story BTW!
Back to the ad, there is a dreamy quality about the ad: the girl – who is wearing sunglasses for dinner – appears to be hovering on her flying carpet, and the gesture she’s making says: “you called, darling, while he’s expecting her with two cocktails – shaken not stirred. The couple in the back – the bikini girl and the guy with the towel around his neck – are finished with the pool and are ready for their meal now. I can’t make out the stuff on the other side of the picture – maybe a group of people standing up, and one who is about to kneel – he’s the waiter probably. Now, where is the famous Louis Roveira and his orchestra?
You know, those who have collections of old Kuwaiti magazines from the 1960s/70s might take a look at them and ask if such magazines can be published in Kuwait nowadays.
March 9th, 2005 at 10:18 pm
Q, I love these ads! Here’s another bit of Kuwait Hilton trivia for you. In 1974-75 when I was a wee girl, I clearly recall going to the Hilton with my American mom - who would do this rebelliously on occasion as she found being the wife of a Kuwaiti hard - so she could have a ham and cheese sandwich. Add that to your list of now contraband items!
March 9th, 2005 at 10:30 pm
anti_reason, did u ever hear of the luoie roviera orchestra before??
Another thing, if u actually know anyone who does have old 60s/70s magazines from Kuwait, please give them my email address to send any ads….
MrsBakerq8, did she bring her own ham & cheese or did they serve it at the Hilton at the time??
March 9th, 2005 at 10:55 pm
Q;
Al-Ahmadi supermarkets used to sell pork products in those days. One of my school buddies actually had a pig grazing in their house garden in Dha7yat Abdulla as-Salem, don’t know what was it for - its not as if they were raising it for q”oozi!
As for old magazines, I suggest you locate collectors of al-Nahdhah. They used to have a cover girl contest. I’m not kidding, I recall girls who chose to pose in bathing attire.
I wonder where are they today?!
March 10th, 2005 at 12:10 am
Q, I’ve been lurking arounf your blog for a while now. please execuse my lack of comments, I’m not a very comment-ish person.
I just wanted to tell you that you rock my fucking socks with these Ads.
Dude do you have a hard copy of them? hi-resolution? I have an idea too.
March 10th, 2005 at 1:44 am
Q, they actually served it believe it or not. She would go there to get her ham and cheese fix. Also, I just heard (I won’t say how) that you can now buy pig products at a certain well-known grocery store many of us go to, except it is hush hush and offered behind the counter to the US military.

“dah kan zamaaaan ya seedeee….”

March 10th, 2005 at 4:37 pm
anti_reason,
When did they ban pork products in Kuwait? And about Al-Nahda, I went to AlYaqatha and AlMajalis to ask them about their archives, I was rudely told that everything was stolen during the invasion, they only have the last 5 years! Which makes no sense at all!!
What I need to find is collectors of the magazines, any clue on how I could do that?
tata, ur compliment means alot to me, coming from someone who’s really into this, literally! Thx dude
But unfortunately, this one I only have electronically.
MrsBakerQ, thats very interesting about the ham & cheese! And they dont sell it in the stores, they only bring it into the country, but sell it to the army in their camps only.
rasheeed, thx for the tips, ill try ilmaktaba ilwa6aniya and similar places next week!
JellyBelly, thx
ill try to find ones of the same quality, most of the others are alot simpler than this one!
shady, where else in the world would u say, I would love our country to go back in time! ;P
