I’d have to go with the first one. I remember first hearing it in ‘91 (I think) and the feelings it aroused (yes, I said “aroused”. Shut up.) were intensely powerful. Also because I don’t really know the other ones that well… ;r
And now, inspired by TheDon, I will regale you with my own patriotic song:
i love Kuwait.
i love Kuwait.
i love Kuwait, Kuwait.
i love Kuwait!
Kuwait is my love, my love.
Kuwait is my LOVE!*
Gigi, patriotically
*there’s actually a deep subliminal patriotic message in this song
Really.

I have 2 songs in mind.
The first was composed and sung during the invasion, and it wasn’t primarily about kuwait, it was about the people who remained there during the worst of times “Ayuha al samidoona fawqa tharaha/ Lakum al majd wal than2 wal ta7iyya” –> The reason I like this song is because unlike traditional national songs, it associated the land with the people. Actually, the people figure first in this song, and this is how we should view Kuwait. I don’t think we can love our country properly unless we love the people living in it.
The second song, it’s Kuwait’s first national anthem, not the current one. I like it because it doesn’t mention, as far as I can remember, any monarch’s name, which I believe is how national anthems should be written. National anthems should praise the country and not the rulers.

For me each song represent a certain memory so I guess I’m gonna go by that.
wa6ani alnahar (I share the same feeling that many already mentioned…it came out right after alta7reer and it evoked a lot of emotions in us and it’s one song I still get all choked up whenever I hear it…the worst home sick song.)
Shams Ala3yadey-Fergat Al Telefzeyon ( I love most of their songs, I think it’s a classic)
3ashat lena alKuwait- I chose this song because I remember going to Las Vegas for 3abduallah Rowasid concert and when he sang that song he made me and my friends cry…another home sick song.
Kil a`3ani alma3ahed alkha9a no preference…but I like Sana’a AlKharaz more than “Shadi AlKhaleej”
Last but not least Fayroz- Al-Kuwait (مبتدئ: I love your choice in this song…coz it has always been one of my old time favorites)

shosho
DO have the OLD Kuwaiti Anthem? Ive heard about it.. but never heard it.. Nawreenah plz
February 25th, 2005 at 1:19 pm
You must have heard it, they kept playing it during the invasion, besides they used the overture as the tune for 9pm news back in the 80s.
I think it’s the one that goes: “Kaan an na7mee al 7imaa wal wa6ana/ Kaan an nathooda 3anho al me7anna” –> I heard that it’s our first national anthem, remember the current one mentions Jaber and Saad which means it is not more than 27 years old, while the state has been independant for 44 years.
Anyways, this old anthem was inspired by Abdulkareem Qasim’s attempt to annex Kuwait, and that is why there is a strong militant resonanace about it. Since it was written and composed in the early 60s, I wonder whether there is any national song that predates it.
A good question for Q to ask is: what was the first kuwaiti national song?

My choice would be for “Ya Darana ya Dar”, as performed by Om Kalthoum – not the modern version!
Honourable mention: “al_kuwaitu ul-Mustaq”ilu”, by Muhamad Abdul-Wahab; and “Min el-Jahra lil_Salmeyah, raf3een 3alam el-7ureyah”, by Abdul 7aleem 7afez.

Heck if Don Juan De kuwait-O can make up a song, I can make up one too.
It goes something like this (adjust his baggy blue pants)
dum da da dum, dum dum.. “you can’t touch this” (points at flag)
dum da da dum, dum dum.. “you can’t touch this” (points at map of kuwait)
dum da da dum, dum dum.. “you can’t touch this” (points at nadee Kathma :P)
(adjust pants)…
Ooo-OOO-ooo-OO (adjust pants)..Ooo-OO-ooo-OO..Stop , Purgatory time
*music out*
Brought to you by the People in support of the Purgatory 2008 campaign.
*female voice, red head*
“Vote for Purgatory, he can jiggle, wiggle and ba-dizzle you with his Purgtorian experience.”
*music starts again*
OOOO, OH! OOOO, OH! OOO, OH! (Purgatory jumping left and right in his baggy blue pants)

Purgatory:
Yeah, what, you don’t think those two are compatible?
Shosho:it associated the land with the people. Actually, the people figure first in this song, and this is how we should view Kuwait. I don’t think we can love our country properly unless we love the people living in it.I can’t agree with you more, shosho! An excellent point, as always. I love the people of Kuwait and believe in them!
TheDon:

Hahaha sounds awfully familiar doesn’t it? ;P But anyway your song doesn’t have the “subtle symbolism” mine does!
Purgatory:LoooooL lol lol SHAKE it Crab-Man!
Q:Hahahaha b-b-but aren’t you getting the SYMBOLISM?! Come on I know there must be some english lit. people around.
Hint: Check out the capitalizations
Anyway, awesome thread
Gigi, enthusiastically
