This is a question/request for everybody, its been something ive been thinking about for a while, and thanks to Zaydoun’s latest post, I realized that many people are interested in the subject of Kuwaiti ads, or at least ads that have been shown in Kuwait in the past.
I know some of u work in advertising or marketing, but this also extends to anyone else who has an interest in Kuwaiti ads…
Is there a way to create an archive of all Kuwaiti old classic ads? Video and print? Where can find them? Even some of the recent ads would be great, like the new Global Investment ad on Gulf Road with the big 100 fils under it, showing how much dividend they’r distributing (i loved this ad), there’s also a creative Nissan ad next to the Nissan dealer on 4th ring road….but anyway, is there any way other than going around taking pictures and scanning magazines?
Ads that have been mentioned -
- Samsung’s “Jassoom, aih da ya Jassoom”
- Pizza Italia’s running man
- NBK’s hala hala zeina
- Like Cola’s footballer
- Crush’s swimmer
- Shay Al Wazza’s sa3eedy
- Abanderado’s weird pedophile ad
- Sharp’s hala hala
- NEC’s sheesha smoking guy
- Tide’s birthday mom
- Tang’s “yil3abo yil3abo”
- Nido’s generation growing
Ads are part of pop culture, and in some ways, they represent the history of an era in Kuwait. If anyone does in fact have any of these ads, or links to them, or good scanned ads (new or old), please send them to kuwaitism@gmail.com to compile a decent archive eventually.
Any thoughts on this idea?

The Tang ad was made in Lebanon… Actually, most advertising produced in Kuwait was created by Lebanese people working in agencies based here, or as I like to call them the “Lebanese Ad Mafia” ;-P

Zaydoun, Lebanese ad mafia is correct lil asaf! As a Kuwaiti, i tried entering the advertising market in Kuwait, and actually tried it out for a while, it was very interesting! Seeing some of them at work when together makes you really laugh at how stupid some of the Kuwaiti companies are! And u get to see how well connected all the Lebanese ad people are when it comes to media relations. To be honest, good for them o shame on us for not doing anything about it!
JB, whenever u do come back, please tell me anyway, id love to get my hands on these old tapes!
esetch, I remember the 7up one, but cant remember the Benetton one at all, sounds hilarious though!
mubtadi’, eee thats a very good one the MBC one, o how did i forget the classic labashkiri (kuwaiti spelling)!!
I think the 7aleeb nadik is a hilarious one too, the one that looks like Braveheart in the desert and all hell will break loose any minute with the grandfather and son looking at all the horses in action, then helicopters, all of a sudden, there’s a Nadek banner! LOL!

February 23rd, 2005 at 9:48 pm
Great idea.
Q, I don’t think this is what the kids sang in Nido’s ad. I think it went:
‘Ma3a Nido kenna wlad esghar; ma3a Nido serna kbar.’
They’re trying to say that they’ve lived their lives drinking it.

LOL!! Excellent stuff!! This is like looking at an old photo album and enjoying the pics again and seeing ones u forgot!!
BoMaryoom, lil asaf i dont remember Benetton! sounds like a good one though!
rasheed, walla a7san iqtira7 so far, shakly bafathy roo7y sometime soon, and go over these ads from old tapes!
Suvai, that actually makes alot more sense! LOL
eva, hem ghanim ilsali7 ma athkirha!
rampurple, they’re memorized bcz they come from when we were kids, and they also come from a time when all u had was KTV or videos, and they were on both all the time! I think thats a major reason why ads were more powerful back then, they would reach everyone, now there’s too big of a market to have a single ad remembered as well. btw, since ur in advertising, do u think you can help with this?

In the early 1970s there was a series of Tide commercials featuring a Lebanese actor (“3emad” something?) – who in those days always played the villain in Lebanese TV dramas (the one with proper Arabic dialogue). Anyhow, in those days Tide offered prizes with the detergents, and at one such campaign I recall the fella promising something like 750,000 prizes (“a prize for each person in Kuwait!”).
What about the advertising campaigns for Nido? You remember when you collect 3 covers, you redeem them for a football or a transistor radio!
Before the Sudanese guy pitched Ariston, there was a series of commercials featuring a fighting couple – the guy was always hungry because the range / refrigerator / … was broken, but Ariston saves the day and their marriage!

Wonna know which TV commercial gets my vote for the greatest of all time?
