Last Thursday, Dar AlAthar AlIslamiya organized a tour for its members to AlSabiyya area, to check out recently discovered tombs and artifacts excavated by a joint team from the GCC countries. Some of these tombs date back to around 1500 BC! It was an incredible experience to see these things up front, its amazing enough that these things actually exist in Kuwait!
The 2 pictures on the right with the circular stone figure are the tombs, and because of the width of it, it is believed that it belongs to someone important. The inner circle is the tomb itself, and the outer circle is something like a border for that specific tomb. I asked about the settlement that should be there along with the tombs, and I was told that they believe that these tombs belonged to people who settled in Failaka island probably. They came all the way here to bury their dead.
The first picture, top left, is of a figure that they found that stretches 45 meters in length, and 2 meters in width. It is still not clear what the purpose of it was, it is not a tomb. They found some pottery dating to the Hellenistic era in that structure.
The picture under that is of tiny structure that is not a tomb, but they think is a living area. It is divided to 2 sides and again it is not clear what the place was exactly.
The picture of a hole in the stone is an intriguing one. It is basically a hole carved in the stone with what seems to be like sunrays also carved next to it. This is was found on top of the hilly areas near the tombs.
The last two pictures are the most amazing pictures. This is a skeleton very recently found in a tomb, and hasnt been taken away yet. The feeling of seeing a skeleton that dates thousands of years in front of you is incredible! They also found many small artifacts and primitive jewelry in the same tomb.

The whole trip was incredible, and Dar AlAthar should be thanked for giving us such an opportunity. If you are not a member, please do join! The sad part about this trip was that out of 50 people, only 5 were Kuwaiti. The rest were Americans, Germans, Indians, Lebanese, Japanese, Egyptian, and so on. When i mentioned this trip to some of my friends, none of them showed any interest! Its sad that we have this historical treasure literally in our backyard, but noone cares about it!
There are many negatives about the whole excavation thing in Kuwait.
- The excavation area is full of campers, with no restrictions stopping them by the government.
- Only 6 people are in charge of excavating the whole of AlSabiyya area, along with the whole of Failaka, and any other area in Kuwait!!
- What really blew my mind is that they think they know exactly where ‘ma3rakat thaat ilsalaasil’ happened in Kathma area, and where they believe the dead were burried. But they havent been able to start excavations there because there is a camping ground on that exact spot and they dont have the authority to kick them out!!
- Madinat AlSabiyya, which will be built soon will destory everything there! That tomb with the skeleton was found as part of a “rescue excavation”, where they try to find things quickly and rescue them before they destroy the whole area.
Walla its a shame that there is no repect or regards to such things in Kuwait by the authorities! Im just glad I had the opportunity to see these places in person before they are destroyed.

Update - Just fount out that AlSeyassah newspaper ran a story about these excavations and the team behind this. Its worth the read for much more details than this post - Article in pdf

My dad asked me to go with him that day.. but unfortunately two days before that I had an accident and that day was basically the family’s lunch day so he had to drive me and my sisters to my grandma’s place hence I missed out on the experience.. but I have been truly going to Dar AlAthar ever since it was born in 1983
ehehehe well not in 83 but ever since I was 4 yrs old I used to play in the Kuwait Museum and go with my father everywhere he went
But I’m glad you experienced this because it truly is a once in a lifetime experience..

Q,

Q,
Nice topic.. But I think with the amount of “influence” dar alathar has, they can protect those historical sites, why don’t they do that?

Best post yet by a Kuwaiti blogger in 2005
This tiny piece of land still holds many secrets and treasures ( not just oil )
Why isnt the site made into a “ma7miya” ?
February 12th, 2005 at 11:09 pm
if you check where kuwait wall was you would find that there is at least 20-30% of it that they didn’t build anything in it , and they didn’t need to destory it all
but they did , and now the american hospital is going down i think
and they just closed dixon house , i don’t know if they reopened it or not , but that should have been a big thing

Purg, I wouldnt even know how to get to the sites! But the guys in the excavation team were great, and willing to help anytime! Id love to go check out their progress by the time u come back!
jackie, salamaaat o kha6aach il soo! Hope ur ok? but still u missed it…its worth missing family lunch once ;P
BoMaryoom, taby illy arda min haatha killa?? While talking to the guys there, I found out that they have found old ruins from around 400 and 300 yrs in Kuwait City itself, and these ruins go back to the original settlers of Kuwait! Guess where they found them? Under Babtain Library and in the piece of land where “alqaria alturaathiya” will be built! Igoolly the guy there that they used to go to the building site of Babtain Library and try to rescue as many things as possible, but says most of the stuff (like old ovens and structures of houses) they could only take pictures of before they were bulldozed. o illy i7ur inna for alqaria alturaathiya they are bringing an egyptian architect to try to visualize how Kuwait used to be and build it there, while the real old Kuwait is already there under ground!!!!
Shurouq, thats my next destination, I really am looking forward to that! Especially now that I have my was6a at the excavation team, i can get to see many extra things ;P
رشيد الخطار, walla its a good point, I will try to bring it up to them, but the structure of “qism al athaar” responsible for the excavations is under “almajlis ilwa6any lilfinoon waladaab”, and its a mess there, and the athaaar part is just a small idaara in a messed up place!
BoJaij, thx for the compliment
itsaddig inna ma7miyat suba7 ala7mad is just meters away from all of these excavation sites?? I dont know why they couldnt just add a fence to those areas and call it a ma7miya tareekhiya!
forza, i think the american hospital and dixon house are under restoration. Im sure about the American hospital, bait dixon i hope so!

Q, It’s really sad that they will build the city in Sabiya. I mean what I dont understand is that they want to build a city in sabbiya for security reasons? It makes mroe sens to build one in Abdali, Salmi, or Kheiran to claim the right for border issues. why continue building in Kuwait city. Government buildings should move to 6th ring road and have some kind of a government building in every mohafaza with ALL the departments (I think they are diong the 7ukoma mall hehehe). That way instead of having people to live in sabbiya dn commute over a bridge that will cost Millions of KD then can use existing highways to go to 6th ring road. Ok thats not the main point. Its really sad to see all those old buildings in Kuwait city being demolished to build glass highrises!! Baladiya is zbala! kilha bidwan ma yifhimon about city planning. CInema hamra and firos! why did they demolish it? its old OK but there ws anough land between the 2 cinemas (the 7oush) to build their stupid highrise of 40 stories. Q, start a campaign to preserve Kuwaiti sites! Am IN hahaha. BY the way there is a building in Mubarakiya which used to be one of the 2 offices of Sheikh Mubarak Alkabeer (near soug el tamer) You think the government will preserve that!! it’s a bo6a6 and falafel store and a store for dishes upstairs)!! ANNOYING Seriously. Dixons house is renovated and open. American hostpital is renovated, but i hears they will continue the first ring road all the way to gulf road, so the american hospital and Qiblia school for girls will go down.

Q8Sheikh!! I was going to put a post about Mubarak AlKabeer’s diwaniya/office that is above the samboosak and falaafil place! I couldnt believe it when I saw that place! I will soon put it, whenever I have time to go to Mubarakiya again, expect to see that posted here!

Nice post… sad thing though that all this will vanish in the future unless someone do something about it. How can I be a member of dar al-athar alislamiya, & what kind of events/activities they carry out?
