For those of you who have been regulars at my blog, you probably have seen my previous restaurant reviews, the Gaucho Grill and Le Notre breakfast. Some of you have enjoyed them and I promised to make it a regular thing, but unfortunately didnt have time to do that.
Today, I did have a chance to go to a restaurant and review it too! The restaurant of choice today is Edo, in Alsha’eb, near Villa Fairouz. Before I do the review, I have to give a background on the whole situation. I got an email from Purgatory72, saying he was coming to Kuwait and that, as promised, we should meet for dinner sometime. So when he got back to Kuwait, I got an sms from him, and we decided to go for dinner and sheesha, and nibaq will be joining us. Since I personally knew nibaq, I figured it will be safe, and I wont be killed by Purg, who always has terror and death on his own blog!
Turns out Purg is a really nice guy! Same with nibaq of course, who really doesnt get enough credit for the amazing work he does at kuwaitblogs and how he has contributed in making this whole blogging thing alot easier and more of a community! We met up for sheesha first to watch the game at Layaly Al7ilmiya, the game sucked, we lost, it ended, we left to Edo.
We got there at around 10:30, and to my surprise there were actually 2 other tables. The place is one of the better designed restaurants in Kuwait. It is basically a lounge/bar waiting to be legalized. Very contemporary and simple designs and colors, very relaxing, and the Japanese touches were evident only in the outside garden (which was full of stones or gravel Japanese style), and the sushi bar that you see once you enter. The music is also very loungy and is a very nice diversion from the usual crap music in every other restaurant in Kuwait!
The main difference between this restaurant and most others is the table distribution. My theory on why Edo is mostly empty is because of their table distribution. The people in charge of the restaurant seem to forget an important factor in dining experiences in Kuwait, which is the fact that many people pick their destination depending on how likely they are too see and be seen by others (ala maki, nino….etc). In Edo, the setup is obviously more intimate and not aiming at the Kuwaiti youth market, and it shows with the crowd, the two tables were a table of Lebanese, and another with a French group. I personally enjoy the seating (and the crowd), you honestly dont feel like you’re in a restaurant in Kuwait.
Anyway, to the food…..please note, if you are not a sushi eater, this review is useless to you, we only had sushi along with appetizers.
We started with starters consisting of a chicken yakatori, seafood dumplings, and beef tataki. The dumplings were good, the tataki (thinly sliced raw beef) is excellent and highly recommended, and I didnt try the yakatori (chicken skewers), Im not a big fan of getting cooked food in Japanese restaurants.
For our main, we ordered 7 different kinds of maki, and to be honest they were all excellent! I cant recall everything we ordered but ill take a shot -
- Tokyo roll
- Dragon roll
- Lady Salmon
- Edo Crispy maki
- Sapporo roll
- Salmon scallop maki
- Osaka roll
The sushi was nearly flawless! I have been to Edo on many occassions before, but yesterday’s was the best by far. I say nearly flawless only because they were out of tuna, but then again, it isn’t just them, most sushi restaurants in Kuwait seem to be out of tuna for prolonged periods of time!
The service was very prompt and was very good, except for the part were something was spilt on the table, and the fact that it took the waitress about 3 centuries to pour my diet pepsi into my glass! But other than those two very minor things, the service was very good.
As for the price, I have to admit the place is above average in its prices. Not crazy expensive, but still more expensive than other sushi restaurants in Kuwait (trust me, I’m an expert and a sushi addict).
Overall….I would definitely recommend Edo. Its not the most active place in town, but its a nice intimate place, and probably would be perfect for business lunches or dinners. The ambiance and the food are both excellent, The service is very good, and the price is average to say the best.
Final grade - 81/100

YES THAT IS IT!! LOUNGE MUSIC!! so much for writing late at night.
Interesting that your rating is close to mine. Of course since you ordered, you know more what we ate exactly. I am also curious on how you gave this place a less than 90 rating, while you have been so generous with other places?
So nibaq was your bodyguard? Who will be your bodyguard next time :)?
So where will be the next review? or maybe people should list some places that they would like to be reviewed and contribute to our eating experience (you can donate your money to our accounts).

hmmm….well the reason I gave this place a less than 90 bcz I think this is what it deserves, and 81 is very good!! My older reviews, The Gaucho Grill got the high mark it deserved bcz it trully was one of the better experiences I had, and it had to be the best steak Ive had in Kuwait. Plus when you add to that the place itself, the service, and the price, its just too good to miss! As for Lenotre, I would absolutely not recommend that place for anything but breakfast! The breakfast was everything u’d ask for in a breakfast, leaning towards a more healthy breakfast too, and when u factor in the price of 3.5KD per person for an excellent start of the day, it just makes it a must go!
Edo, on the other hand, was excellent last night, and I recommend it to anyone reading the review….but its not one of those “not to be missed” kind of restaurants! Its more of a “if ur in the mood for sushi, and ur in the neighbourhood, its worth a visit”
Know what I mean?
And next time I wont need a bodyguard, u turned out not to be a psycho killer maniac as ur blog would suggest ;P
I tried asking for suggestions on what to review, I didnt get any replies….again, if anyone has a restaurant they’d like to see reviewed, please tell me! The sooner the better, hopefully will get a chance to do one more with purg before he leaves in a week or so!

I like Edo’s setup but prefer Maki’s food. However Edo has that yummy spinach and sesame appetizer that none of the other Japanese places have. I love that!
I can’t believe Purg actually liked it! ;-P
Btw, nibaq totally rules!!

zaydoun, I prefer maki too, its my fav restaurant in kuwait, and thats why I wont review it, i will totally be biased! I know everyone there including the chefs by a firstname basis, and they know my order by heart! When you go there, ask for my sushi (using my name), if u like tuna and u like salmon, ull love my sushi!

Zaydoun, why don’t you join us in the next review to see with your own eyes :)?

Excellent post Kuwaitism! But just cuz u have millions of dollars in your bank account to spend on oysters and stuff doesnt mean that others can enjoy the same amazing experience. Therefore, to all the poor ppl here i present my review of “Canary” on glamurous Tunis St.:
Canary:
I got there around 4 pm on a windy day and fought 10 gangz of sa3ayda to get premium seating across the local dumpster. orderd falafel pieces, dumped them in delicious house 7ummus and proceeded to savor the taste of heaven. and it only cost me 300 fils weyya bibsi. the end

Q, I’ve also been there for lunch but would like to mention a word of caution for those thinking of going on a Friday: On several occasions when I have been there on a Friday some of the owner’s families have been dining there too, and it can feel like your sitting in the middle of their home as they have a tendancy to take over the place! By that I mean you have the poor japanese chef running back and forth with plates of fries for the kids and on one unfortunate occasion the lovely lounge music that you mentioned was replaced by a Barbie CD, as per the request of the daughter of one of the owners!

I don’t like sushi
But I was wondering, how about a review of Hard rock cafe, but at a time where its not busy at all :r since I really do hate busy places.. I like quiet places much more nicer and comfortable ;P

Was it Maki that started the stupid trend of having a flat screen TV tuned to Melody or Mazzika at full volume? I’ll never forgive them for that, they’re lucky their food is so good.
And I hate how people stare at the screen instead of talking with each other. Have loud music by all means, but play your own. And enough with the J.Lo and Kylie live concert DVDs!!!

bianca….thx for the heads up! I totally wouldnt have expected something like this at a place like Edo!! Doesnt go with the whole feel of the place! Barbie CD….LOL!
Jackie….Hard Rock cafe it is!! U ask we jump!
Zaydoun, I have to totally agree with u on this one! The best time to go is early dinner, when there arent many 15/16 yr old girls! And tell the guys there you dont want to hear any Kylie, J-Lo, Beyonce, Shakira, or any of that crap! As a matter of fact, I was pissed off once by a group of little girls who kept the Beyonce thing going and going that I asked for the Michael Jackson DVD, and requested ‘Man in the Mirror’ with all the pictures of famine and people dying, the girls stop their noise, they stopped eating, and the DVD was changed at once! LOL!

I say lose the screens altogether and just play music!!

Teenagers should be banned from restaurants! B-A-N and another N for emphasis! We want to go and eat and have a good time, so send the young ones somewhere else, like pizza hut or hungry bunny (if you can find one)
December 22nd, 2004 at 12:55 pm
purg, there actually is a place that is very similar to hungry bunny! Its called super bunny, and its in salmiya near Maki, i think its the turn right after shaikha complex, the one with starbucks on gulf road! Its exactly the same as hungry bunny, I remember trying their chicken fillet a couple of years ago, just like the old one!

Interesting! son of a bunny!
