This topic is a very intriguing one. Indian movies are very popular all over the world, with Bollywood producing more movies per year than any other film industry in the world, including Hollywood. Most Indian films have followed the same formula since the 80’s, with a full dosage of action, romance, humor, music, and everything else all put together in every movie. The main difference is that in recent years, many of these films have become very beautifully made.
Before I get to my point, let me first say that I am not a big fan of Indian movies by any mean, I dont mind them, but id rather watch a half decent English movie anytime. On the other hand, my wife is a HUUGE fan of Indian movies, she knows all the actors (she says the reason she married me was bcz i look like her favorite actor!) and actresses. We argue alot about Indian movies, I dislike them because I hate how unrealistic they are, and I dont mean by jumping over walls and fighting 300 ppl while blindfolded with one hand, because that rarely happens in Indian movies these days. What I dont like is how the hero of the movie is a hero in every sense, always handsome, always funny, always smart, always right, and always always wins in the end (with one or two exceptions). I also obviously hate it when in the middle of a normal conversation between two characters, all of a sudden 200 ppl wearing the same thing jump into the scene and all suddenly start dancing and singing in unison with the main actor and actress appear to be changing lightbulbs in midair with both hands. That sort of thing pisses me off!
Ok, my wife’s argument is that most Indian people live in such poor conditions that they need this break from reality and this is their only way to smile or cry by following the fantasy created by Bollywood. As for the dance scenes, her argument is that they are symbolic, since no sex is allowed, this is a way to show that these two characters are intimate. Fair enough, I absolutely agree with these point, but my argument is, realisic portrayals of daily life issues (including sex scenes) would be something that the normal person can connect with more than fantasy. How come ALL of the bollywood films are made that way, there is no such thing as a genre movie, every movie has everything. Comedy films have action, action films have comedy, and so on.
The hero of the movie, the saviour of the day, is everybody’s fantasy. He has no faults! I would love to see an Indian movie where the hero is a normal everyday kind of guy, discussing real issues of the Indian people. For example, instead of having the handsome smart sexy funny hero in a dillema of which of girl to chose driving his fancy car to a fancy nightclub, with a big dance routine inside the club, with all the flash and glitter, wouldnt it be worth trying to have a normal everyday guy as the hero, showing his daily struggle with food, shelter, employment, and so on? Of course, there has to be some sort of hope or optimism in the story, but that also can be realistic. Instead of the guy getting the girl and living happily ever after, they could use an issue that has been important as of late, which is how many US companies are shifting their business to India, and how many small Indian villages are benefitting from this with the creation of jobs and so on. I personally think this story would give more hope and would have more impact on the normal person because it is something they face and connect with.
I do understand and agree with the other point of view, but all im saying is that alternatives should be available. With a population nearly a billion, im sure there will be many people who would appreciate that. Does anybody know if there are independant Indian movies, like the American and European independant or arthouse movies? And what do you think of my idea? should i move to Bollywood yet??

I’ve seen an Indian movie about lesbians called “Fire”. Naturally it caused an uproar but it raked in big bucks as well.
This formula of action, romance, humor, and music (every goddamn five minutes) has proven to be successful not only with Indians but also with Egyptians. So, people stick to it. People don’t like change. They like what they know and are used to. That’s why Bush won
I’m not saying it’s good and I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m just saying that this is how it is.

probably in mergab on DVDs ba3ad, they come in a 3-in-1 package..
it’s funny how I came across this subject, I just watched an indian movie last night, coincidence ?!
you also forgot to mention the length of indian movies, a minimum of three hours. You can take breaks, walk around the place, come back and you’ll still catch up with the movie; like you didn’t miss a thing :>

The funniest Hinglish movie I’ve seen is called “East is East”. I laughed like crazy at some of the stuff. I wonder if you need to have an understanding of the Indian way to get some of the humor.
There are a few independent/arthouse movies made in India every now and then. One of them, “Mango Souffle” was shot entirely at a friend’s estate in Bangalore. Her husband produced it. She got credits for art and costume design, I think. The property (house et al) was featured on the BBC a few years ago for being so farkin beautiful! The movie got rave reviews from lots of the independent/arthouse/gay movie community. Some reviews were pretty nasty too
Q, there was a horror movie that came out of Bollywood last year called Bhoot. Watch it if you haven’t. I thought it was pretty good.
Great blog!

es Q, I am Indian
Some Art and Commercial films that I presently recollect -:
Ankur, Bombay, The Bandit Queen, Roja, Zubeida, Pinjar, Tamas, Lagaan,
Sholay, Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Do Bigha Zameen, Mughal-e_azam, Mother India, Deewar, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander,
Mirch Masala, Devdas (The older one) and many many more.
Probably enough to make you a convert
Fuzziest Navelus, One is better equipped to grasp the message/humor of an indian movie if he/she has some understanding of the Indian culture.

Purg - Remember you’re the one who taught me that hiding things (like your gay porn purgy remember that?) under your bed is very very safe!
Q - yup “Fire” can be found in Kuwait but only a bootleg copy with English subtitles. Y’know the places that sell them for 1KD each.

Marhaba
I used to cruise your blog in the old days before blogging happened to me in a significant sort of way.
Mabruk to you on your clarity of thought and non-partisanship which you effortlessly bring to your blogs!
Like with much else about India and things Indian, a one size fits all rule cannot apply to this rich cornucopia of culture and life-styles which has come to define this vast continent-nation.
You say while your partner enthuses about Hindi cinema, you are put off by the bawdy antics of Bollywood film making. I totally empathise with you, on that Sir, knowing precisely where you are coming from.
However, it is not entirely the case that Indian cinema today has lost the plot and you will still be able to make peace with arty films from Calcutta(albeit Bengali ones) by the likes of Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen & Aparna Sen.
As for Bollywood(Hindi cinema) I’d need to take a deep breath before I can make any qualified pronouncements
on these. Suffice it to say, what Hindi cinema suffers from is an acute poverty of ideas. However, I think they may have turned a corner with Ashutosh Gowarikar’s `Laagan’ after it got nominated for the Oscars’. In many ways this low budget film was the tipping point for topical film making in India.
The tide has definitely begun to turn and there are today promising young things, such as, Deepa Mehta, Farhan Akhtar, Revathi and Sanjay Leela Bhansali among others who dare to be different.
Furthermore, you won’t go wrong with a Govind Nihalani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Mani Ratnam or an Amol Palekar film.
If my sales pitch for Bollywood, thus far, has been any good you won’t hesitate joining your partner this weekend for Mughal-e-Azam now showing in Kuwait.
This is a period film of a romantic genre from the late 50s-early 60s and has recently been revived in colour print. You are in for a treat with Mughal-e-Azam, an Indian Romeo & Juliet of sorts, which tries to capture the ethereal beauty of the main lead - `Madhubala’(India’s answer to Audrey Hepburn) on celluloid. So chill out as you pop your corn, Sir!
Without any further ado, I should like to, if I may make a recommendation of the foll. films for your viewing pleasure:
Saaransh : okayed by kuwait
1) Mani Ratnam’s` Bombay’
blacklisted in Kuwait
2) `The Road’- out in Kwt
3)Govind Nihalani’s `Lakshya’
blacklisted in Kuwait
4) Govind Nihalani’s’Dev’
blacklisted in Kuwait
5) Govind Nihalani’s` Thakshak’
Not banned in Kuwait
6) Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s`Khamosi’
available on video in Kuwait
7)Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film `Black’ : status in Kuwait unknown.
9) Mirch Masala:” ”
I reckon KNCC is steadfast in its belief that all good things must come in small packets which is why it clears pure dross for public consumption while rejecting true works of art and cinematic value. It’s sad but true.
Have a jolly weekend!
