Wednesday, officially the start of the weekend in Kuwait, even though many of us have work on Thursday. Kuwait turns into an open view zoo. All kinds of animals are released roaming the streets prowling for their next victem.
Location for wild beasts -
Marina Mall
Salhiya
Souq Sharg
Just like last week’s post about the cinema and going out on a weekend, this time I went to Salhiya, on a Wednesday. I have been there once before on a Wednesday and that was months ago. Im not a big fan of Salhiya in the first place, I always get this annoying suffocating feeling when I enter. I try to avoid it as much as I can, but today I finished from a diwaniya, had a ghabga a couple of hours later, so a friend called me and asked me to join them at Salhiya, I thought to myself, “what the hell, how bad can it be?”.
This is the image that comes to mind -

In Ramadan its 100 times worse than normal days! Its like people are waiting for fu6oor, and then there’s a huge secret race (to the above mentioned places) that nobody told me about.
The worse problem is that some of the ashkal there were unbelievable! Following Jane Goodall’s example of researching gorillas in their natural habitats, my research at Salhiya starbucks showed that we had -
- huge groups of guys who are sitting and very rarely talking, without even once looking at each other
- you had women who would be considered prostitutes in any other place in the world (i couldve sworn one woman had body paint on, no clothes can be that tight!)
- guys illy cool chicken nuggets, grown men with spikey hair and pants tighter than girls’ o of course sraakh ib soot 3aaly o iltha7ka everyone has to hear throughout the entire mall (the KAAAAAAAAAAAAK style)
- the 13 or 14 year old girls who like like Cher or صبوحة but with more makeup
- guys who look and smell like they just left their own wedding to come to starbucks
I HATE WEEKENDS nowadays! Honestly I do! The thouhgt of sitting at home watching tv or reading a book is so much more appealing than joining the madness that is Kuwaiti weekend!
Who has a decent suggestion on what to do on a weekend? Lets say today, Thursday, where can someone go and have a good time without adding food or drinking into the mix??
I’m open to suggestions and will post the winning suggestion on the blog with a big thank you and an award!!!

I stopped going to these places six years ago. I also stopped watching TV. Amazing how much time I have to do “stuff.” More amazing is the diversity of “stuff” to be done.
cheers.

Your “stuff” sounds shady, haha, pun…e7im! Anyway, I agree that these places are not to be visited, but still, id love to see what alternatives you guys have to offer? It would be great to discover new places in Kuwait!

-Stay home watch a movie
-go to diwaniya
-go to shaliah (in non-ramadan days)
umm… thats about it here in Kuwait I guess…. ooooohh I forgot… Go to Bahrain for one day (by car).. Have lunch there take a walk & come back!!
I tried it once and it was a nice trip. Went there, had lunch @ the fishmarket restaurant (Great seafood) took a long walk and then headed back to Kuwait!! You might think waaaaaih min lah khelg, but with good company, time would pass so quickly you won’t notice it.
Take care

I just hang out with my friends. You can do that anywhere and everywhere. Then you also got board games to play with each other. It is interactive, fun and a good waste of time.
October 28th, 2004 at 11:50 am
go to the new shuwaikh beach or yoom il ba7ar
October 28th, 2004 at 12:14 pm
hmmm….so far, i like GEOrhythem’s suggestion of shwaikh beach or youm ba7ar (but is that still available?)
As for other suggestions -
* diwaniya & movie at home: sure, there are options every now and then, but im asking about recommendations on where to go when thinking about going out, with my wife for example.
* shalaih: id love to! but in ramadan thats a definite no no!
* Bahrain: hahahaha, i like that! But try convincing your wife to do that!
* board games: yes they are fun, usually we do that at shalaih when with family, cant see myself doing that otherwise (except when we play trivial pursuit with money on the line, excellent fun!)
I want suggestions on places to go in Kuwait, rediscovering Kuwait in a sense! Any more ideas???
October 28th, 2004 at 12:44 pm
I agree.. shalaih in ramadan isn’t a good idea at all.
But as for the Bahrain idea, believe me all what you need is a couple of 3abdal7aleem cassettes (So the wife gets arroused when ur singing to her ;-P)
along with a cassette for firqat altelfizyoon. (Everybody likes to sing saboo7a kha6abha naseeb)
And that’s it my friend.
and once you try the lobster with cheese at the Fish market restaurant…. you are hooked.

Alla.. Fish Market Bahrain
I want to go, I want to go
Q, tonight at 9 there’s a Charbal Rouhana concert in Sheraton. Pay 15KDs and help support breast cancer research.

As you may know, Kuwait’s suddenly come to life in the ‘party’ sense. I’m not talking your typical parties, though. More the ‘exclusive’ ones that are by invite only, but which are held in pre-reserved public places. Fantastic hangouts with people you really wouldn’t mind mingling with and a nice place to be if you’d rather not commit yourself as a hermit on our weekends. Might I recommend Villa Moda on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, where they’ve started the concept of a ‘modern diwaniya,’ complete with Shisha. And really, if there’s chill music, an interesting crowd AND Shisha, how can you say no?
Honestly, though, it’s a get-together for a group of like-minded individuals looking for a little something to do in Kuwait - something that doesn’t involve your typical ‘wild beasts’, chicken nuggets and Cher-wannabes.
But, dude.. what’s wrong with body paint?
October 28th, 2004 at 10:37 pm
shewrites,
Ive been to some of those so called parties. I enjoyed some, hated others. As for villa moda, ive been there twice maybe in my life, and the feeling i get there is like sal7iya but multiplied! But the lounge thing sounds pretty cool, except i think im allergic to the ‘villa moda elitist crowd’, i start suffocating.

ShuShu,
I just came back from the concert with H. It wasn’t so bad until Adiba decided to “grace” us with her creations. EstaghfarAllah. We left.
And Q,
Where to go in Kuwait with your Wife ? Why don’t you try asking her she might give you a few good suggestions.
If you had already asked her then how about Walking along the new Mamshah on the Waterfront ? It has a babbling brook! I was impressed. Plus, 6omasha… People from every Nationality you can imagine. That’s the kind of Entertainment I like.
If walking isn’t your thing, then I suggest El-Embarikiyah. Because I am a Sha3by type of Person.. Really.. I am!
Other Options…
-Dar Al-Athar Al-Isllamiyah (but they are closed during Ramadan)
-Bayt Dixon (U gotta see it once)
-Tareq Rajab Museum (I love going there, it always surprises me with how much stuff it contains)
-Kuwait’s Modern Art Museum. (It’s Interesting and new)
-Scientific Centre. (if u got kids, it’s great!)
- You also have the Kuwaiti Cinema Club, sometimes they have special screenings, if you are into that kinda thing.
IF ALL THIS FAILS !!!!!!!
Then we should start doing our own activities on a monthly basis. Tara Wallah Flash Mobbing Wanasah!

ps. Sorry for the Long Comment.

These places are REAL!!I love imbarkiya!
Cant wait for Dar alathar season to start again!
Tariq rajab is an amazing place!
Bayt Dixon is great too, been there alot!
Scientific center is gorgeous even for walking outside it!
I was very very impressed with the Museum of Modern Arts! The building itself is a beauty!
Kuwaiti Cinema Club? Im intrigued! Tell me more plz!
I like places where ppl are real o 3ala 6abee3athum! Thats why i love imbarkiya especially, and dislike salhiya and villa moda!

Q,
Merci beaucoup for awarding me First place *smile*…
As for Villa Moda and Sal7iyah the problem is that they take themselves too seriously. I enjoy going there when I am in the mood for a show, because everyone that goes there puts on a show. Take it with a grain of salt and Laugh Away..
As for the Cinema Club, I am not quite sure if they have any activities at the Moment, but I shall ask and post you a comment

Its in the big empty space in front of souq sharg and the fish market, i went twice, and it was absolutely empty!! everytime i mention it, noone believes me! They seriously need good PR and marketing!
October 29th, 2004 at 4:11 am
i’m really interested in the place but i can’t imagine the space between soog sharq and the fish market .. could you maybe draw a map or something?
October 29th, 2004 at 4:23 am
Hmm…I think I shall start an events calendar of some sort…
October 29th, 2004 at 9:53 pm
Q…
It’s been a while since the last time I went. But after this post, I think I shall continue hiding out in my room. Nowadays I just wanna sit in bed, lie down, read, blog, or study. Too tired to go out. And if I do go out, it’s usually to get a massage… Ahhhhhh… bliss!

OMG Dar Al Athaar Al Islamiyyah hehe I have grown up with that place.. It helps if (ehem ehem dad works there) hehehe I actually started going to the Kuwait National Museum and Dar Al Athaar Al Islammiyyah ever since i was 5 years old but now I just stopped going because it’s kind of not my scene, too quiet, and boring old stuff hehe
plus Dad always pressures me to go so I kind of rebel
