The New York City subway celebrates its centennial anniversary this week. Its shocking when you realize that they had their subway system up and running 100 years ago!! Ya3ny imagine it was started before your grandfather was even born! Thats freakin ridiculous!!
When Dubai announced that their subway system will be complete in 2010, everybody was impressed. But now look at this way, they’re only 106 years behind!!! And thats Dubai we’re talking about, ya3ny for Kuwait it will probably happen when cows go 7ajjing on their horns.
Someone might comment and say, “but we dont need subways! New York had alot more people at the time!”……NOT TRUE! In 1900, NYC had less than 2 million people, and they decided to build the subway, good vision! Just look at Fahaheel highway, or any of the main highways actually in the morning at around 9 during Ramadan, its hell!
Anyway, just think about it, their subway system is celebrating 100 years, we just had our second bus company working last year ![]()

Q. Imagine if we had a real subway system here how much easier the traffic situation would be. Especially when you consider how much time is wasted looking for parking. But remember, most Kuwaitis lacked the vision for it backed then. I hear that when the 5th Ring Road was being planned, the minister of public works (الأشغال) at the time insisted that 4 lanes was way too much for Kuwait!
Anyway, here’s why a subway won’t work in Kuwait:
- People want to show off their cars, buggies, motorbikes etc.
- Guys are not ready to give up the national pastime of cruising the streets
- بنات الناس الكشخة will refuse to take the subway مع الهيلق
- It would have to be severely air-conditioned in summer, at great expense
- Islamists will enforce gender-segregated subway cars, killing all the fun.
Dubai only has a subway system planned because Mohamed Bin Rashed fancied one, not because they need it. Before implementing a subway there, a little bit of city planning would be a good idea.

Of course Zaydoun, I agree that the reasoning behind building it bcz the guy wanted one, but i give Dubai credit for actually DOING things as opposed to saying we need to do things here in Kuwait!
As for why it wont work, I agree with the air conditioning part, which is not impossible to fix. For the first three points, who cares? Id rather be on the subway with normal ppl instead of the people you described. When it comes to point 5, I doubt they’ll do such a thing, my worry with segregation is about Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis, will we reach a point where Kuwaitis wont mind sitting next to Indians and Filipinos and so on.
The more I think about it, the more I like it! Think about it, having a huge central station in Kuwait City, people would come every morning from their man6aqa station, where they would walk (exercising benefit) or park their car there instead of the traffic jams and parking situation.
Even after reaching the Kuwait City station, that means they would have to walk a bit, which is normal everywhere else in the world. It would help people’s health, PLUS the whole area will pick up in terms of coffee shops and small stores which people will end up walking by on a daily basis.
If you think the traffic situation is bad now, imagine how it will be 10 years from now?? Put in mind the amount of children Kuwait has as part of the population, 10 years, it will be absolute hell!

Subway in Kuwait. That should never be implemented in any case. A monorail is more like what Kuwait needs. I was actually thinking the other day while driving to salmiya from Kuwait city on (cairo road -road #35 that is) why cant they just put a monorail from kwuait city going to Hawally and to salmiya along cairo road! now that will reduce shit load of traffic dont you think?

Just a quick comment…a friend of a friend of mine is an urban development planner…here’s her two cents…a subway system is not cost effective in a city unless its central urbanized population exceed 5 million…where is q8 on that spectrum?
